Day 3: Khndzoresk, Shaki Waterfall

After leaving Bagaburj in the morning we head to the village of Old Khndzoresk, which is famous for its cave houses and a suspension bridge 160 meters long. Khndzoresk is a mountain settlement whose inhabitants literally cut down their houses in solid stone. The population of Khndzoresk was relocated to a new place in the 1950’s and the village turned into an object of tourist attention.

Day 1: Hike from lake Parz to village Gosh

Early in the morning, we will start our hiking in Dilijan from Yerevan and will head to the treasure, the timeless and everlasting Lake Sevan. The lake is situated in Gegharkunik province, at an altitude of 1900 meters, and is called the pearl of Armenian mountains. The lake is surrounded by mountains and constantly changes its appearance depending on weather, mirroring the merest climate fluctuations, so even the movement of clouds can change it beyond recognition. There, we will visit the monastery of Sevanavank, which is located on a peninsula that used to be an island. The monastery was constructed in 874 by Princess Mariam.

After visiting the monastery, we will continue our journey to another alpine lake hidden in the mountains. This is the most popular trail among the ones, who are hiking in Dilijan. We will start the hike from Lake Parz and through the mountains covered by dense forests of Tavush, will go down to the village of Gosh. The village is named after one of the 12th-century Armenian thinkers Mkhitar Gosh.

Here we will see one of the largest monasteries in the region – the medieval Armenian monastery complex of the XII-XIII centuries. On the territory of this complex, there is a two-meter high khachkar, recognized as the best for the excellence of the work of its creator, the master Poghos.

Day 2: Old Dilijan and fairy Lastiver

After having breakfast, we will go for a walk around Dilijan. The town is covered with forests and trees, which explains why the locals call it the “Little Switzerland of Armenia”. Not far from Dilijan, on the afforested slope of the mountain, lies the monastery complex of Jukhtakvank, which consists of two churches – The Church of the Holy Mother of God and St. Gregory the Illuminator Church. According to the inscription that appears at the entrance, the former one was constructed in 1201, whereas the exact date of the latter’s construction is unknown. There is a medieval cemetery near the monastery of Jukhtakvank.

There you will see waterfalls, tree houses and medieval caves, in which hermits once lived. This paradisiacal place is gorgeous at any time of the year and in any weather.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that at the beginning of our journey there is a zipline, so you can have a ride before starting the hike. If you don’t know what the zip line is, then you need to watch our video.

This 3 day hiking tour to the Southern Armenia is a journey, which will take us to the IV century, when Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity.

And so let the adventure begin!

Day 1: Mount Mets Parakhadem

From the summit of Mets Parakhadem, there is an impressive view of Mount Ararat. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the view of Ararat. This is one of the reasons why the route has become one of the most popular in Armenia.

We’ll start the hike near Tigranashen. Passing along the slopes of the Urts Mountains, we’ll ascend the rocky peak of Mets Parakhadem.

Day 2: Vorotan gorge & abandoned cave villages

In the morning we will move to Syunik region and go down to Vorotan Gorge, where we will see several abandoned villages with huge houses carved out of the rock. After seeing all these you can easily imagine how people once lived in the caves.

Old Khot is one of the oldest settlements of Syunik region. People call this place “Armenian Machu Picchu”. In Old Khot there are a lot of graves, which date back to I-II centuries BC. The ruins of Red monastery, which was built in XII century, were found in the territory of one of the graveyards.

After exploring the village Old Khot, we will continue our way through the narrow wooded paths to an abandoned village Old Shinuhayr (“Father of settlements”). Shinuhayr is one of the oldest settlements of Syunik. The last inhabitant of the village lived there until 2017. In the XII century the central church of the village, which was built in IV-V centuries, was destroyed by the strong earthquake. The church was restored after the earthquake and until now it stands untouched by the time in the territory of Old Shinuhayr. After exploring the village we will move to Goris, where we will stay for the night.

Day 3: Old Khndzoresk – Tatev monastery & Devil’s Bridge

In the morning we will see one of the most visited villages of Syunik – Old Khndzoresk, which is known for its cave dwellings and 160 meter long swinging bridge. At the beginning of XX century Khndzoresk had approximately 8000 inhabitants. In 1950 was made a decision to resettle the inhabitants of the old village to the new one, which was also called Khndzoresk.

Next we’ll cross the deep Vorotan Gorge on the world’s longest ropeway, which will take us straight to Tatev monastery. Tatev monastery is one of the must-see places of Armenia. The monastery was named after St. Eustathius, who was the pupil of St. Thaddeus. Likewise his teacher he preached Christianity, and met his martyr death for the new faith in Syunik. In IV century in this place people built a small church, which pilgrims started to visit from V century. At the end of VIII century Tatev became an episcopate of Syunik region.

After exploring the monastery we will move to the Devil’s Bridge. Devil’s Bridge is the only bridge made by the nature itself. There are stalactite formations and natural “baths” of mineral water. If the weather would be hot , you can swim under that natural baths.

So passing through the centuries, we will reach, let’s say, the late medieval period and visit the Noravank monastery, which the locals also call the Red monastery. The gorge where the monastery is situated is known for its steep red cliffs, towering behind the monastery. In Soviet times the championship of rock climbing passed here. Noravank is also known for its bas-relief where the image of God is.

Trekking in Armenia is the best way to discover the hidden treasures of our country and a lot of those treasures are hidden in Geghama mountains. The trip to Gheghama Mountains is an escape from civilization, where only shepherds with their flocks go.

Geghama mountain range has a volcanic origin, as it consists of many extinct volcanoes. The length of the range is 70 km, and the width is 48km. The highest peak is Mount Azhdahak (3597 m). In the crater of Azhdahak a crystal-clear crater lake is situated, which is filled with icy water of the mountains all year round.

A huge amount of petroglyphs and sculptures of mythological creatures, known as “vishaps” (dragons) are situated in the Geghama mountains, at an altitude of 2600-3200m. Almost all aspects of our human life are reflected in that petroglyphs. Most depict men in the act of hunting, fighting, dancing and even cultivating land. Some also show the worship of fertility, maternity, ancestors, heroes, spirits and time.

They were considered to be gods or spirits of water. In prehistoric period in Armenia near the river headwaters, streams and any other water sources Vishapakars or dragon stones were placed. Vishaps are highly symbolic artifacts dating to the second millennium BC. They probably owe their name to local folk tales where dragons are monstrous giants living in the mountains.
