Spring is one of the best seasons for hiking. Nature wakes up from the winter sleep, the sun is warming. The spring weather in Armenia is different and depends on the climate in each region. There is still snow in the highlands, while flowers are already blooming and fields are turning green in the warmer parts of the country.

We offer you the top 5 most beautiful hiking destinations in the springtime. Each of these tourist destinations is interesting in its own way. This is a unique opportunity to discover Armenia from a completely new perspective and enjoy the breath of spring with its blooming colors.

Mount Dimats

Mount Dimats (2,378 m) is one of the mountains of the Ijevan range. There is a picturesque view of the rocky wall of the Ijevan ridge and the Aghstev gorge from the top of Mount Dimats. No doubt, after seeing this splendor, you will forget about the difficulties of the road and want to enjoy the view in all its glory.

Mount Dimats is famous for the fact that the deposits of the Frfr gemstone are located here. And the rock itself has no official geographical name. The only nickname of the rock, which was given to it by the people, is mentioned in the famous historical novel “The Call of the Ploughmen”. A new name was given to the mountain in order to breathe new life into it.

In addition to climbing Mount Dimats, this tourist destination also includes a visit to a Hidden waterfall.

Dzoraget Gorge

The Dzoraget Gorge, located in the Lori marz, is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful gorges in Armenia. The city of Stepanavan was founded nearby the river, which received the same name as the gorge. The depth of the gorge there is about 100-120 m, and the length of the river is 67 km. There are several hiking trails along the Dzoraget Gorge, the most popular of which leads to the rock of Tsitskar.

Mount Yeranos

Khachaghbyur gorge

Our path lies through dense forests and deep gorges, and ends at the Okonavank Monastery. The length of the hike is 18 km, the route runs along the entire Khachaghbyur gorge.

Shreshtasar is located in Vayots Dzor region, near the village of Elpin, from which we will leave. There were other villages in the vicinity of Mount Shreshtasar, but they are abandoned now. We will pass through the territory of the village of Vardenik, where there is a lake with the same name. Then we will return to the village of Elpin by a circular route. We will visit another abandoned village on the way.

Armenia is found in the world’s oldest maps and history books. Sometimes as an independent state, and sometimes divided between neighboring empires, but nevertheless the name Hayastan-Armenia has always been mentioned since ancient Greek and Roman maps to this day. In this article we will look at some of the ancient maps, to give our readers an idea of the position that Armenia occupied on the ancient maps of the world.

For those interested in more detail, I recommend reading Rouben Galichian’s work “Armenia in World Cartography”, 2005, or a brief version of it called Historic Maps of Armenia, 2018.

1. Babylonian clay tablet, 6th century BC

The oldest extant map of the world is depicted on a clay tablet. It is the Babylonian map found in Iraq, in 19 century. Now it is stored in the British Museum.

This Babylonian map of the World dates back to 6 century BC. In ancient Assyrian and Babylonian sources the kingdom of Ararat is referred to as Urartu. This name is mentioned on the world’s oldest map. Of the countries mentioned in this map, only Armenia still exists. All the other ones have disappeared from the world map.

According to cartographer Rouben Galichian, the map shows the world in the form of a circle, surrounded by “bitter” waters, in which there are 7 islands. In the center of the map is Babylon, next to it Armenia and Assyria are depicted. Another 7 cities are depicted in a form of small circles. From the mountains of Armenia, the Euphrates River flows through Babylon and Marshes, and reaches the Persian Gulf.

On the back of the tile there is a text that describes seven islands in the sea and unusual creatures living there. The islands are depicted in a form of triangles, most of which are damaged and illegible.

2. Herodotus, 5th century BC

The world according to Herodotus. Edited by Charles Muller, published in the Smith’s atlas. Armenia has a central position among the countries that existed at that time.

4. Strabo, 1st century BC

Based on Strabo’s work, the British cartographer John Murray reconstructed the world map, one of the chapters of which is dedicated to the geography of Armenia.

5. Claudius Ptolemy, 2nd century

Famous Greek geographer and cosmologist Claudius Ptolemy was the most prominent cartographer in the ancient world. His most important work is the eight-volume Geography. The text about Armenia in this work is in the fifth volume.

This is a map of the world, surrounded by winds and divided into climate zones. Besides the Red Sea, all the seas are blue and the mountain are green. The Greater Armenia and The Lesser Armenia are located between the Black and Caspian Seas.

The center of the map in white is the Greater Armenia (Armenia Maior), which borders with Media in the east, with Assyria in the south, Lesser Armenia in the west (Armenia Minor), and Colchis (Abkhazia), Iberia (Virk), Albania in the north.

7. Countries occupied by Alexander the Great

This map is one of the pages of the Atlas published in Latin in Amsterdam. It represents Alexander the Great’s invasion of India. The map shows the Greater Armenia.

8. Map of the Holy Land or the “Earthly Paradise”

The map covers the area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf, and the prominent Eden, located near the city of Babel (Babylon). The beautifully decorated title is surrounded by pictures of scenes of Eden on both sides. The map itself is stunningly created, with the combination of real and biblical geography. Here you will find the Land of Nod, the Garden of Eden, the Tower of Babel, and other semi-mythical places. The map was drawn by Visscher as a part of a five-part series of maps to be included in Abraham Van den Brock’s Bible written in 1657. This is the first edition of this important series of maps that formed the basis of many other Bible maps that appeared in the 18th century.

9. Map of the Terrestrial Paradise

This map was drawn by English cartographer Emanuel Bowen. It is also based on religious beliefs. The Terrestrial Paradise, Eden, is shown on the territory of Armenia, between the lakes Van and Kaputan. The map lists four rivers flowing from the Bible Paradise: Aras (Gihon), Pishon, Euphrates and Tigris. At the center of the map is Mount Ararat.

10. The map of Armenia according to old and new geographers

This map of Armenia was published in Venice in the 18th century. Many cartographers and geographers consider this map to be a replacement for the missing map of Shirakatsi’s “Geography” (“Ashkharhatsuyts”).

“The Mountainous Island” is a unique bilingual book, containing accurate information about the Armenian Highland and the mountains of Armenia.

Tigran Varag, the author, points out that “The Mountainous Island” is not the type of book that should be read from cover to cover and then put away, but rather one that should be opened, inspected and consulted on a regular basis.

All of the mountains described in the book were climbed by the ArmGeo team over 10 years. The book also contains information and images concerning such mountains that were only found in archives.

The book “The Mountainous Island” is printed on high quality-paper, with a tangible topographic image of Ararat on the cover. The book is 300 pages long and bilingual (Armenian and English).

Damavand: Ascent of the Year

The mountains of the Armenian Highlands: Ararat (5165 m), Sabalan (4811 m), Aragats (4090 m) and Sipan (4058 m), as well as the Greater Caucasus Mountains: Kazbek (5047 m) and Elbrus (5642 m) are widely popular among fans of mountain tourism. The Armenian Geographic team has made many trips to the mountains and implemented a number of projects, such as “Ours” and “Tsovu Bolor” (“Around the Sea”) over the 10 years.

A completely new stage in the development of mountain tourism in Armenia began on July 7, 2022. On this day, our group of 25 people completed the ascent to the top of Mount Damavand (5610 m), the highest dormant volcano in Asia.

This ascent was a result of our work over the past years. The result may be expressed in the following words: 10 years of productive work, 10 years of valuable experience, 10 years of strong friendship and mutual trust.

25 Armenians on the top of Damavand

Let’s begin the story with the fact that our Iranian guides were not sure if all of us, 25 people, were able to complete the ascent. Of course, that prediction did not stop us. Our team of 25 members returned 3 days later.

So, Hrach Ara-Ivanyan, a member of the ArmGeo team, who had reached some mountain peaks with the guys did not share the guides’ skepticism: “I knew the guide was underestimating us. I was sure we would succeed in our ascent even before we began it. This confidence stayed with me all the way. And here we are: all of us, 25 people standing on the top of Damavand!”

Although the upcoming ascent did not promise to be easy, Astghik Torosyan neither believed the guide’s words:“It was ridiculous. The guide probably thought we were too self-confident and underestimated the difficulty of the ascent. But we succeeded, so the guide was wrong.”

And for Lena Zakarian, the guide’s mistrust even was a source of motivation:“I was one of those people whom the local guide was skeptical about, but his words only spurred me on.”

Shortly before the ascent to Damavand

Most people in our group had completed the ascent to the summit of Sabalan (4811 m), the second highest mountain among the mountains of the Armenian Highlands, literally 2 weeks before. Of course, this achievement did much to strengthen their resolve.

It also should be mentioned that guys had been preparing for the ascent to Damavand during several years by regularly participating in some mountain hikes and training. Ani Hakopyan took the upcoming ascent very seriously: “Although I had participated in many hikes, trained hard and even passed a special medical examination, I was still anxious.”

Damavand became the first five-thousander for Lilit Tonoyan: “I didn’t know what to expect and how my body would react to such a height. The decision to complete the ascent to Damavand after climbing Aragats seemed too daring and risky. But then anxious thoughts went away, giving way to a feeling of self-confidence.”

High Peaks of the Armenian Highlands

There were some experienced hikers among us who had climbed the mountain peaks of the Armenian Highlands, but climbing Damavand became a new stage for them. According to Ani Hakobyan and Lena Zakarian, the main goal of the ascent to the dormant Damavand volcano was “the desire to challenge oneself” and “to reach the top of the mountain at any cost.”

Astghik Torosyan had reached the peaks of the four highest mountains of the Armenian Highlands: “In general, mountain tourism may be compared to climbing stairs: you always understand that you may stop halfway or continue climbing from step to step. It all depends on your desire only.”

Garnik Poghosyan, an experienced hiker, was preparing with great enthusiasm for the ascent to Damavand: “Just imagine: you are on the top of the highest volcano in Asia, or you visit the capital of Iran to soak up the atmosphere! What an experience!”

July 4th. Mount Damavand Day

The day of our ascent turned out to coincide with a national Iranian holiday, Mount Damavand Day. Hrach Ara-Ivanyan: “Events we took part in and people we met in the city of Damavand were incredible! We met thousands of fans of mountain tourism, and the vast majority of them were locals. It means the mountain hiking community of Iran is pretty active and people follow good traditions.”

“I have never seen so many tents in one camp. It was nice to know that many people celebrate Mount Damavand Day by going on a mountain hike or an ascent. It’s also worth mentioning that there were more middle-aged people than young people,” says Garnik Poghosyan.

Lena Zakarian: “On the day of acclimatization, I saw people walking like zombies on the way back from the mountain top. It made me remember my ascent to Sabalan. I was sleepy while returning, but I felt relaxed at the same time. I felt I belonged to something really great then.”

The most beautiful moment of the ascent

All 25 members of the team called the most breathtaking “the moment when we finally reached the summit of Damavand.” Ani Hakobyan emphasizes: “We, 25 friends, climbed that mountain together”. Garnik Poghosyan adds: “Victory may only be celebrated when the whole group is standing on the top of the mountain.”

This result certainly indicates that each participant was ready for the ascent both physically and psychologically. As you know, group cohesion is one of the keys to success.“Damavand was my first five-thousander. When the guys and I finally got up, we hugged tightly and warmly congratulated each other. At this touching moment, my heart was filled with emotions, I even had tears of happiness, I had a feeling of pride in myself and a feeling of unity with the team,” ̶̶ says Lilit Tonoyan.

To imagine how difficult the ascent was, one should consider the features of the terrain in the area of the Damavand volcano with its periodic emissions of sulfurous dust. Although this natural phenomenon is generally unfavorable for the human body, some mountain hikers may even enjoy the view of it.

“At first I didn’t want to go forward because of this sulfur. In addition, we realized that the sulfur stains would not soon be washed off from our clothes. But the sulfur emitted by the volcano was a beautiful yellow-green hue,” says Lena Zakarian.

For Astghik Torosyan, the most difficult thing was standing on the peak shrouded in smoke: “I couldn’t control my breathing for almost 15 minutes. Excitement added to the feeling of suffocation. The only thought was pounding in my head: I climbed Damavand! I burst into tears because my emotions were too much. My friends hugged me and congratulated me on reaching the summit. Of course, after that I felt better. And I thought that for this amazing moment it’s worth climbing Damavand again.”

Despite being dangerous, sulfur emissions may be very impressive. Hrach Ara-Ivanyan tells about the natural phenomenon this way: “The view on the top of the volcano was fantastic. Everything looked somehow unreal as if we were on an foreign planet.”

A new ascent to complete and a new challenge to take up

Lilit Tonoyan knew from the very beginning that the ascent to Mount Damavand would be a test of strength and a source of new experience for her: “At first I was asking myself constantly: why on earth am I into it? The only answer was I want to challenge myself and strengthen my will. I want to prove that everything is possible.”

Ani Hakobyan stayed determined despite it felt like the world was against her: the guide’s skepticism, the suffocating smell of sulfur and many other difficulties of the ascent: “Since the very beginning I knew for sure I would reach the top of the Damavand volcano.”

As Hrach Ara-Ivanyan says: “We have summed up the results of the last 10 years with our ascent. It became a test of our strength and a start for new ascents. Metaphorically speaking, we started our ascent with just one backpack behind us, and returned with two or three backpacks filled with experience.”

As the experience of each person is unique, we might keep on telling the story about the ascent to Damavand for a long time. But let’s just summarize it with the quote by Astghik Torosyan: “Trusting the people around you makes you stronger. And if you know that they are strong not only physically, but also spiritually, this gives them “wings.”

Matenadaran (Armenian “Repository of Manuscripts”), also known as The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts is located in Yerevan. The collection of Matenadaran manuscripts was included in the UNESCO international program “World Book of Memory” in 1997.

Matenadaran, the first scientific research institution in Armenia, was created on the basis of the Etchmiadzin Manuscript Library in 1921. Matenadaran moved from Etchmiadzin to Yerevan in 1939 and was located in the building of the Public Library (now it is the National Library).

Construction of the Matenadaran building designed by architect Mark Grigoryan began in 1945 and was completed in 1957. By decision of the government of Soviet Armenia Matenadaran was transformed into the Scientific Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts on March 3, 1959. The institution was named after the creator of the Armenian alphabet Mesrop Mashtots in 1962.

Due to the expansion of scientific activities and the growth of its collection, a new and spacious Museum was built according to the design of architect Arthur Meschyan in 2011.

17,000 manuscripts that are stored in Matenadaran are devoted to practically every sphere of the science and culture known in Ancient history and the Middle Ages (history, geography, philosophy, etc.) Those ancient manuscripts were written in Armenian and other ancient languages: Greek, Arabic, Persian, Assyrian, Latin, Ethiopian, Georgian, Hebrew. The contents of many priceless monuments of writing were preserved only due to the fact that those documents were translated into Armenian in the Middle Ages.

There are statues of great figures of Armenian culture and literature: Movses Khorenatsi, Anania Shirakatsi, Mkhitar Gosh, Toros Roslin, Frick, Grigor Tatevatsi in the courtyard of the Museum and stone-carved figures of Mesrop Mashtots and Koryun on a small platform below.

The oldest manuscript kept in the Matenadaran is the “Gospel Vekhamor”, dating back to the 8th century AD. The Presidents of the Republic of Armenia take a solemn oath on this Gospel during their inauguration. You may see the largest (“Msho Charyntir”, weight – 28 kg) and the smallest (weight – 190 g) book in Armenian in the Museum.

Sabalan / A Story of the Climb

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of our activities in 2022 a number of notable climbs were made, among them was the climbing of Sabalan (4811 m), one of the highest and most beautiful peaks in Iran. After Ararat (5165 m) Sabalan is the second highest peak in the Armenian Highland. We have been organizing climbs to Ararat since 2014, but this year’s climb to Sabalan was the first.

It was the first time the group had been to Iran, which naturally helped to make the participants’ experience more vivid. Like any climb and journey, in the case of Sabalan, for some participants it was a search for new adventures, for others it was a goal, but for Hrach Ara-Ivanyan it was a long-awaited climb, which he was looking forward to. “The desire to climb Sabalan has been keeping me awake for a few years as this mountain is the second highest in the Armenian Highland. And after the climb in 2020 was postponed because of Covid, I became even more impatient.”

Iran: another world, another reality

Especially after the trip to Chaukhi, Iran was incomparable and extremely new and different, welcoming our group with its mighty mountains and many colors. And like real tourists who had the opportunity to discover a new world, the 16 participants of the group will remember the days they spent in Iran for many more years.

And Iran was indeed a different world with its rules, written and unwritten laws. But, as Hrach noted, “if we visit a neighboring friendly country more often, our perceptions will be more complete, and I think that there will be no question of adaptation, we just need to recognize, accept and respect this culture. And we got acquainted with the laws and social order before we left”.

Sabalan: beautiful and mighty

Speaking of the climbing of Mt. Sabalan itself, it should be said that for most of the participants it was not only to be a new victorious climb, but also to make the goals associated with Demavend more definite. But first things first. The participants of the climb to Sabalan were prepared by many years of hiking experience. However, the constant encounter of expectations and reality is also inevitable, and in camping life, reality always exceeds expectations. “In the morning, when we saw the mountain from the trail, we immediately felt what a beauty we were dealing with. And the hike showed us that it was not only beautiful, but also powerful.”

Our group of 16 participants went to camp (3700 m) on the first day and on the second day after acclimatization started the climb to 4811 m at 4:00 am.

New climbing, new cooperation

We must definitely say that the climb was successful and easier thanks to the members of the “Sipan Union”, whose many years of mountain experience helped the group a lot, certainly giving them more confidence. “The friends of the “Sipan Union” association are not only experienced climbers, but also cheerful people, especially the older ones, with a young spirit, ready for new peaks. All in all, the fact that you participate in a joint climb in a foreign country with local Armenian climbers was very pleasant.”

Although all the participants, including Hrach, were attracted to the sunset of Lake Urmia and the scent of the Tabriz Market roses, the moment of reaching Crater Lake was incomparable and irreplaceable to him. “The dawn of Sabalan was certainly breathtaking and dazzling, but nothing compares to the moment when we reached Crater Lake, walking in a row along the trail to the summit. The view from the peak of the highest lake in the Armenian Highland was breathtaking, and after a few minutes I felt the coldness of the water with my whole body.”

As we’ve already mentioned, we celebrated our 10th anniversary in 2022, making it a year filled with new heights and goals. Fall hikes are a great way to enjoy the most pleasant weather games, walks in a cool and pleasant environment, feeling the warm and pleasant touch of the fall sun in the cold air. Each destination is unique and unrepeatable in that it gives you the opportunity to discover Armenia from a different, completely new side, with new colors and new breath. Each of these destinations has something to tell you, surely, each of them in their own way. To tell you about everything, of course, is to say nothing. So all you have to do is choose the most appealing route, complete it and be convinced.

Three Hawks Loop

The nature of Tavush is unique at any time of the year. Tavush is the land where it is always pleasant, interesting, there is always something to say and show, and with each visit you find something new, something you have been waiting for and following. In October and November, it begins to impress especially with the splendor of its nature and the richness of the colors. One of the three trails in Tavush that is less visited and perhaps unknown to many is the Three Hawks Loop.

This exclusive destination is located in Dilijan National Park, near the village of Hovk, about 2-3 km away. It includes both rocky and beautiful forest trails. The best season for this destination is April-May and October-November. Along the way you will be greeted by stunning copper-colored cliffs, Tavush forests, and bare, majestic mountains. This is a place that will open you up to a whole new Tavush.

From Tsovagyugh to Gosh Lake

This hike from region to region promises indescribably beautiful and fabulous scenes accompanying the entire hike. Another Tavush route that takes us through the dense, colorful Tavush forests that have become a favorite of many of us.

From Tsovagyugh to Gosh Lake

Our hiking route from Tsovagyugh to Ghosh starts from Tsovagyugh, which is located on the coast of Sevan (10 km north of Sevan City). Walking through the Areguni Mountains, we stop to admire Lake Kakach, often called Lake Tsovagyugh, located at the foot of the mountain. Then the trail continues to Lake Ghosh, where we have the opportunity to enjoy the lake surrounded by the brightest and warmest colors of fall, located deep in the forest.

Mount Apakekar is also known as Abeghakar. It is located in the Tavush region, between the villages of Haghartsin and Hovk. The height is 1651 meters.

The hike starts from Haghartsin village. The colorful forest trail of Dilijan National Park leads to the top, and already from the top you can see the most expected landscapes of Tavush: picturesque mountains Ijevan and Aghstevi Gorge.

Ghosts of the Vorotan Gorge

Ghosts of the Vorotan Gorge – this is how we call the route, passing through the abandoned villages Old Khot, Old Shinuhayr, Old Halidzor – one of the most impressive directions, through which you will discover the most vivid and colorful nature of Syunik with its dense forests, gorges and valleys. All the way is accompanied by warm forest views of the Vorotan Gorge.

The village of Old Khot was one of the oldest settlements of the Syunik region. The village is located in the rocks. Here people first adapted caves, formed in tuff, volcanic rocks, for habitation. Later, the cave dwellings were expanded with stone structures, so it seems as if the houses grow out of the rocks.

Ghosts of the Vorotan Gorge

The trail continues from Old Khot to Old Shinuhayr through the beautiful Vorotan Gorge. At various times it was known by the names Hayrashen, Shinoy-herk, and Shnher (i.e., father of the villages). The area of the village is rich in remnants of material culture. 6 km west of the village, to the right of the old road Shinuhayr – old Halidzor, is a B.C. Graveyard dating back to the I millennium, which proves that the village existed from the times of the Van or Yervandun kingdoms. The route passes by the monastery of Kusanats Anapat, located on the edge of the canyon. It was a writing center at the end of the 17th century, where a number of manuscripts were copied and illustrated, some of which can be found in the Matenadaran. Unfortunately, it is in a state of disrepair. The route ends in the village of Old Halidzor.

Mount Drakhtisar

The region of Vayots Dzor impresses at first sight with its hard and huge rocks and deep canyons. Here, volcanic eruptions and other natural phenomena over the millennia have created a unique topography: endless mountain ranges, mysterious gorges, mountain passes. Mount Drakhtisar has its name for a reason, everything here is truly “heavenly”. Mount Drakhtisar is located in the Vayots Dzor region. Its height is 2209 meters. It is a watershed between the Enkuzats Valley and Shresht gorges.

The route begins from Yelpin village and descends the slopes of Sreshtasar to Lake Vardenik. Then it approaches Mount Drakhtisar through the Shresht gorge and descends to the Enkuzats valley along the summit section. Along the way there are views of the Nakhichevan and Vayots Dzor mountains.

Since interest in the places we visit changes every year in Armenia, we have chosen hiking destinations that have become the most in-demand and favorite places in a very short time. These top 5 hiking destinations in Armenia have surely been on our list of regular hikes, but interest was significant this year, and we decided to make them recognizable to those who want to discover something new and add them to their hiking list.

You can find out why these destinations have become the most popular ones from the participants of our expeditions, who shared with us their sincerest impressions and feelings.

Mount Dimats. Shaghot Waterfall

Mount Dimats (2378 m) is one of the beautiful mountains of the Ijevan range. The peak may not be particularly impressive for its uniqueness, but the view from the top of the rocky wall of the Ijevan range and the Aghstev Gorge will make you forget about the difficulties of the long trail and enjoy the view in all its glory.

Mount Dimats has become a favorite and well-known to many because of the uniqueness of the “Frfr Rock”. In fact, this rock has no official name. The name is found in the novel “Call of Plowmen”, and it was intended to revive the old and give new life to this name. The destination also includes Shaghot Waterfall, located in a recess of the rocky walls of Ijevan Mountains.

“Despite the fact that I was afraid of the hiking difficulties, I’m happy that it didn’t stop me“‎.

“I think that Mount Dimats has become one of the most popular destinations because of the beautiful pictures shared on the Internet, which just makes you want to be there.

“Every hiking trail is unique. The trail leading to Mount Dimats is interesting because it follows both a forest trail and an open space”.

Lakes of Aragats: Rapi, Mtnalich, Astghkan

These three lakes are among the high-altitude lakes of Aragats. Their close proximity to each other makes it possible to include them in one hiking destination. The lakes are located at an altitude of more than 3000 meters above sea level. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the northern wall of Aragats from the lakes and the beauty of Aragats in the reflection.

“Very impressed by Mtnalich. The unique blue-green color of the water, the uneven arrangement of stones around, the reflection of the northern wall of Aragats, the never-ending moves of clouds and fog make the space of the lake very peculiar”.

“I think that most people cannot climb mountains of great difficulty, some just adore mountain lakes and come to enjoy swimming in mountain lakes. Perhaps that’s why this destination is a combination of enjoying the views from the heights, swimming in the lakes and, of course, hiking from one lake to another accompanied by the northern wall of Aragats”.

“Many people feel comfortable, the “agony” of the trail is quite minimal.

“I don’t know why, but I was euphoric on the shores of Mtnalich. The world seemed perfect, or more likely was perfect”.

Mantash Waterfall

Mantash Waterfall is located on the northwest slope of Mount Aragats. Of course, it is not very high, but the path that leads to the waterfall through alpine meadows makes the hike even more spectacular and interesting, which is what makes this place so special.

“In my opinion, Mantash Waterfall is very different from other waterfalls in Armenia. Its green hue gives it an unusual appearance. The stone at the top of the Waterfall also has a sharp cut. The rectangular-shaped stone, green grass, and waterfall create a peaceful composition. I compare this view to photos I’ve seen of Aztec settlements (I may be wrong, but that’s my opinion). In short, the Waterfall has an extraordinary view”.

“It’s a refreshing hike, as the hike starts and ends near Lake Kari, and you rest right by the waterfall during the hike”.

“I think this has become one of the most in-demand destinations, as it’s a not-so-difficult route with a fantastic view”.

Mount Mets Parakhadem

Mount Mets Parakhadem is one of the highest peaks of the Urts mountain range. Its height is 1955 meters. From the top there is a wonderful view of the mountains Urts, Big and Small Ararat. The Urts mountain range is located between the Shagap and Aratso rivers, a tributary of the Vedi, in the south of Ararat province. The landscape is semi-desert in the foothills and mountain-steppe in the highlands.

“As I’ve started to hike more frequently than I used to, I realize that this time it was easier for me. Beautiful pictures, good mood to feel the clouds under my feet. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the view of Ararat. I think these are some of the reasons why the destination has become one of the most popular.”

Tsakkar Lake

This destination is one of the least visited places, but because of its unique alpine landscape does not leave anyone indifferent. Lake Tsakkar is one of the high mountain lakes of the Zangezur range. It is located at an altitude of 3272 m. Its area is 3 hectares, also called Sagkar or Tsaghkari.

“It was special to me as it borders Nakhichevan, and the color of the lake differs from other lakes”.

“On either side are the wonderful mountains of Zangezur and Lake Tsakkar with pure turquoise-colored water, and on top are impregnable cliffs”.

“There were too many spectacular sights in two days, I still can’t believe my eyes. This hike was definitely different as it included four different and marvelous waterfalls in Lichk, about 100 meters apart, and Lake Tsakkar. Also a big plus was that the weather made it possible to swim more and enjoy the beautiful moments. Usually the weather in the mountains is cold, not suitable for swimming, the only thing you can do is to enjoy only by looking at the lake from afar”.

“I think hiking preferences and camping experiences are very individual, but this is one of those destinations where there is a lot to see, everyone is sure to find something to their liking. I will definitely persuade all my friends to come here”.

The Volcanic Seven Summits Project

Many people are aware of the Seven Summits, which are the highest mountain peaks of seven continents. Besides the Seven Summits, there’s the Volcanic Seven Summits project that includes the world’s highest volcanic summits. An Italian mountaineer Mario Trimeri was the first person to complete the Volcanic Seven Summits in 2011.

The project is based on the idea of climbing real volcanoes, which are volcanic centers with craters at least 300 meters high above sea level.

The Volcanic Seven Summits project compared to the Seven Summits is lighter, more interesting, and no less eventful.

Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano in the world, located in the Atacama Desert, on the Argentina-Chile border.

Climbing Ojos del Salado is challenging due to its high altitude, extreme weather conditions, and technical difficulties in some sections of the ascent. But it’s also fascinating due to the stunning views of the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Andean peaks.

One of the unique features of Ojos del Salado is the presence of a crater lake Laguna del Inca, located at an altitude of 6 390 m, which is considered the highest lake in the world.

Kilimanjaro is the highest volcano, the highest summit in Africa, and the highest single free-standing mountain in the world at the same time. Mount Kilimanjaro is included not only in the Volcanic Seven Summits but also in the Seven Summits.

The ascent usually takes about two or four days, depending on the difficulty of a route and a mountaineer’s level of experience.

One of the unique aspects of climbing Mount Orizaba is the diversity of the terrain and ecosystems. You pass through arid deserts filled with cacti, before ascending into high-altitude forests and eventually reaching the glaciers and snowfields near the summit.

Damavand is the highest volcano in Asia and the highest summit in Iran. One of the reasons for going to Iran is exploring its rich cultural heritage: ancient buildings, mosques, and bazaars.
