Gear List for Climbing Mount Ararat

Climbing Mount Ararat is an interesting journey to the historical Armenia and an experience of climbing one of the most famous 5000+ mountains of the world. From the technical point of view Ararat doesn’t have any difficulties, there are no cliffs, glaciers or dangerous passes. For an ascent you have to have an appropriate equipment and of course a hiking experience.

One of the most primary questions is about the appropriate mountain clothing and hiking equipment. According to our experience in hiking and mountaineering we have made a gear list which will help you to get prepared for the ascent. The list is made special for the ascent to Ararat. Unlike other hikes, during this hikes all your heavy stuff will be carried by horses. You will carry only your small backpack.

Let’s divide the whole list of necessary things into 3 groups:

main equipment
things for camp and overnight stay
additional things and electronics

Main equipment

Big backpack (70-90 liters)

In a big backpack you should put things, which later will be carried by horses. If you don’t have a big backpack, you can put your things in a big bag, which will be possible to carry on horses. You aren’t going to carry it by yourself.

A small backpack will always be with you, so you can put in there all the things you need during the hike from one camp to another.

Thermal underwear

This is a set of underwear made from a special breathable fabric. It is worn directly over the body. It perfectly absorbs sweat and dries quickly. As a result, the body stays dry, therefore warmer.

This fabric is also called “faux wool”. Fleece is lighter and softer than wool. And compared to a wool jacket, a fleece jacket continues to keep the body warm, even after it gets wet.

Till the second base-camp you can wear ordinary hiking pants. During the last ascent from 4200 up to the peak you should wear warm pants. It is recommended to wear rain and wind resistant hiking or ski pants. It should be made of membrane fabric, be waterproof and warm. The material of pants can be natural, from goose feathers, or it can be synthetic. Natural material is lighter and is better at keeping the warmth. Equally warm synthetic material is usually heavier, but also cheaper. Let your preferences guide you. The membrane layer is waterproof and breathable at the same time.

You should have 2 jackets. One should be light, for hiking, the other should be a warm winter jacket, which will protect from the wind and low temperature. Make sure that your jacket has a hood.

Buff

The buffs keep you not only from wind and dust, but also from snow and cold. While walking the buffs keep the neck from wind. And if there is a hard wind you just raise it to cover your face.

Gloves and mittens (2 pairs). You can also take ski gloves. The main thing is that there is a waterproof layer on the outside of the glove, and soft and warm layer on the inside.

Sunglasses

You should have 2 sunglasses with their cases. It is recommended to take mountaineering, hiking sunglasses. The sunglasses need to have at least 3rd category of protection. Lenses of sunglasses have categories. The first and second categories are for city and easy walks. In our case these glasses are not useful. The third category transmits 8-18% of sunlight, forth category – 3-8%. Since there is not that much snow on Ararat in summer, sunglasses of the third category with be just right.

Raincoat

As the weather can change momentarily on the mountain you should have a rain coat with you, especially when it’s not heavy and doesn’t take up much space.

Socks

Trekking wool socks can be synthetic or made of merino wool. The wool of these animals is very light and warm, it very quickly absorbs sweat and dries. These socks have anatomical shape, often made of seamless fabric. Take several pairs of socks with you.

Hiking shoes should be comfortable, with thick soles, you should feel comfortable in them. It is recommended to buy a bit bigger one, to wear it with thick and warm socks, so it should be larger for one or two sizes. You should wear them for several days in advance, so it could take the form of your feet, otherwise, they can harm your feet during the hiking. It is forbidden to go climbing in new shoes. We recommend purchasing boots created specifically for mountain climbing: Zamberlan, Lowa, Scarpa, Asolo, LaSportiva.

Till the second base-camp (4200 m) you can wear usual hiking boots for spring/autumn hikes (with thick soles).

Sleeping bag

Sleeping bag has three temperature level – comfort, lower limit and extreme. Comfort shows the most comfortable temperature for sleeping. Lower limit shows the lowest and safest air temperature for sleeping. Extreme shows the air temperature at which you will feel cold, but there will be no serious consequences. For Ararat choose a sleeping bag with comfort indicator of -5 to -10. On the second camp the weather can reach -4 degrees Celsius.

Sneakers, slippers and other lightweight shoes to give your feet a rest in the camp.

On our way to the top the water usually freezes so it’s obligatory to have a thermos so you can drink a tea or water during the cold.

As we begin walking to the top on Mount Ararat at 1 o’clock in the night so it’s obligatory to have a head flashlight. Before the hike you should check the battery as the last day it should work for 5 hours.

The ascent to Mount Ararat lasts several days. Also taking into account changing weather conditions in mountains, phones can die faster. Be sure to bring along a minimum 10.000 mAh power bank, so that you can use your phone longer.

The first question that arises for those who are planning to go hiking for the first time is “What to take with me?” We can write a whole article about each hiking item, but here we have collected the hiking gear list for one-day hikes.

Backpack

Backpack leads the hiking gear list. The most common question for beginners is which backpack to choose? Everyone wants to buy one backpack, which they will use for both one-day hikes and hikes with overnight. However, we must disappoint you, because such backpack does not exist. For one-day hike, you need a backpack with a capacity of 25-45 liters, because in one-day hikes you will not need a tent, sleeping bag, clothes and food for several days. For overnight hikes, you need a backpack with a capacity of 70-90 liters to fit all of the above items.

There is a big variety of hiking backpacks. Choose a backpack designed for hiking and climbing. The rest is a matter of taste. Bright colors will help you to stand out in the nature or find your backpack easily in case of losing it.

First-aid kit

It is one of the essential things of a hiking gear list. In the first-aid kit, you must have pain relievers, antispasmodics, allergy medicines, materials for treating and dressing wounds, and so on.

Container for Water

You need a metal water bottle. Such bottle can be used for many years. This way you will save your money and protect the environment. You will not buy water every time and promote the production of plastic.

Trekking poles are an integral part of the hikes. The more difficult is the hike, the more you feel the need for trekking poles. These poles not only serve as “additional legs” but also reduce the tension from knees by 25-30%, distributing the load from the legs to the arms and shoulders.

Warm Clothes

In the mountains weather changes unexpectedly, and having warm clothes is obligatory. However, having warm clothes does not mean that you should take your entire wardrobe.

Raincoat

A raincoat is the simplest and cheapest hiking item that should be in your backpack in any weather. There are many types of raincoats. The most convenient of them is a hiking raincoat called “poncho”. The poncho also protects the backpack, preventing your belongings from getting wet, even during a long rain.

Cap or Bandanna

If you are planning to go hiking, then you should forget the phrases “I don’t like caps”, “I don’t look beautiful in a cap” and so on. A hiker must have a cap, bandanna or a buff. Walking without a cap under a burning sun may be very dangerous for you.

Winter hat

A winter hat is essential even in summer. In the mountains, the weather changes unexpectedly. For example, in summer, on Mount Aragats or on the top of Mount Azhdahak you can often feel the need for a warm hat. Take care of your ears so that they serve you for a long time.

Having sunglasses is necessary in summer and obligatory in winter. Especially in sunny weather, walking on snow is very dangerous. The rays of sun reflecting on the snow can “burn” your eyes and cause snow blindness. Therefore, it is necessary to wear sunglasses when hiking in the mountains, especially in winter.

Flashlight

For hikes, you will need a headlamp. The biggest advantage of these flashlights is that your hands are completely free. Choose a flashlight with batteries. It is impossible to charge electronics in nature, and spare batteries will save you everywhere.

Spoon, knife, metal cup and bowl

Camping utensils should be metal, durable. Take care of nature and give up disposable plastic dishes.

Lighter or matches

Always have lighter or matches with you. Do not rely on smokers. Sometimes no one smokes in a hiking group, and all participants remain without fire.

Swimsuit

You need to take a swimsuit with you not only when you are going to Lake Sevan, but also when climbing the mountain. The temptation to swim in the cold lakes found in the mountains is great. If you have a swimsuit with you, you will not miss the chance to swim in mountain lakes.

Plastic bags

How to prepare for a backpacking trip

If you want to know what to take to an overnight hiking trip, then this article is for you. Here you will find your backpacking checklist.

To enjoy the trip and make it unforgettable, you need to prepare for it not only physically, but also technically. In mountains the weather changes very quickly and unexpectedly, and you should always be prepared for any weather conditions. Your backpack can fall into a river or simply get wet in the rain. To keep the contents of backpack dry, it would be better to separately wrap each item in waterproof bags, and then to put all this in one common bag.

Lets take a closer look and understand what do we need to take with us for an overnight backpacking trip. Lets divide the backpacking checklist into two groups: clothes and euqipment.

Trekking boots – high, durable, with thick soles
Gaiters
Thermal underwear, preferably several sets
A few pairs of thermal socks and regular socks
Membrane jacket – windproof and waterproof
Hiking pants, at least with minimal water resistance
Fleece jacket or other similar jacket, merino wool or synthetic sweater

Lightweight vest or jacket. They don’t take up much space in backpack and are very comfortable to wear at the camp
Sneakers, crocs or other similar slippers for the camp

We recommend you to have a backpack with a capacity of at least 60 liters – for 4 days. If the route is long, then the volume of the backpack increases too.

Keep in mind that you will not use knife for self-defense.

Special means of self-defense

These are – pepper spray, stun gun, firecracker. Do not take with you anything resembling a firearm: air or gas gun, stun gun that looks like a gun, and so on. For their effective use you need to be well trained, otherwise you will just attract unnecessary attention.

This is a very necessary thing in your backpacking checklist. Would be better to carry several power banks with you, even if they have less power. If the battery of one of them dies from cold, or if it gets damaged, you will have emergency options.

When you take something with you on a hike, you must be prepared for the fact that it can break, burn in the campfire or simply get lost. Take things that will not be difficult to say goodbye to.

Everything that you pack, you will carry on your shoulders. So take only really necessary things.

According to experienced hikers, it is extremely difficult and almost impossible to complete a technical ascent without serious training and reliable equipment. A person feels uncomfortable even at an altitude of 5000 m. The weather conditions at the top of a mountain above 5000 m may be truly unfavorable to people. You will need special equipment for technical altitude climbs +5000 m (for example, to the peaks of Kazbek or Elbrus).

This is a list of equipment for technical ascents:

Clothes

Jacket

When in the mountains it is extremely important to wear pieces of clothing that retain body heat. It is recommended to wear two special jackets at once. First jacket with fleece lining makes up the middle layer of a hiker’s clothing, which should generally conform to the shape of the body and provide comfort during the ascent. The second jacket is worn over the rest of the clothing and serves as protection from cold wind, rain and snow. Wearing a jacket with a hood is advised.

If you want to protect your head from falling objects and other types of impact, you should pay attention to helmets with Hardshell technology. Durable ABS plastic fuses with foam for durable protection. The weight of this type of mountaineering helmets may be higher, but their price is usually more affordable compared to top-end models.
If you prefer a classic style and are looking for a lightweight helmet, consider the In-mold design. Thin polycarbonate replaces heavy plastic, and there are no gaps between the layers.
For the optimal combination of protection and weight, it is recommended to consider hybrid versions of helmets. An example of such helmets are models from the Berns brand with a polycarbonate shell glued with durable Zip Mold foam.

It is important to understand that foam helmets generally do not regain their shape and will lose their protective properties after one hard impact. If a crack or dent appears, the helmet should be replaced.

In addition, you need to make sure that the backpack is waterproof and has special mounts for an ice axe, protective helmet and other equipment. The perfect backpack ensures not only your comfort, but also safety.

How to choose a hiking hat?

One of the most important parts of hiking outfit is a hiking hat. Generally, the choice of the clothing is essential during hikes, because our body needs extra protection and comfort in non-standard circumstances. In mountains, the drastic changes of weather can have different impacts on our skin. Therefore, we need to get well prepared before the hikes. In mountains, the rays of sun can be very strong and only the sunscreen may not be enough for protecting your skin. The possibility of weather changes is also big in mountains. Taking into account all these factors, hiking hat becomes a must during hikes.

Hiking hat should be practical and have protective features. There are different types of hiking hats, but according to their purposes there are sun protection hats and cold protection hats. Whether you hike during summer or winter, you are going to need both of them.

For sun protection people should wear wide-brimmed hats on hiking trips. The brims will protect the skin from sun and wind. Hats are mainly designed to protect the scalp and face, but there are hats that also protect the neck.

They usually do not sit very tightly on the head and as a result they can easily fall off. Therefore, it is important that the size of the hat matches your head.

Cold protection hats differ from sun protection hats. They are designed to protect your head and ears from cold and strong winds. They have the feature of keeping the warmth and normally they don’t have brims. Cold protection hiking hats are often made out of fleece or have fleece lining. Fleece has thermal insulation properties and keeps the head and forehead warm. Due to the waterproof properties of polyester, only the external part of the surface gets wet. This property helps to keep the warm even after getting wet, which is not typical for woolen clothes.

How to charge your gadgets while hiking?

In modern urban life we use a variety of electronics. And although many people claim that they go to the mountains to take a break from city life, from phones and Internet, even in the mountains we still need some gadgets. For example, a smartphone, which is a phone, a photo camera and a GPS navigator at the same time. We also often use action cameras, flashlights, GPS navigators, walkie-talkies, e-books and so on. And if without a camera or an e-book you will survive in the mountains, then your phone and the walkie-talkie should always be accessible and charged. In the mountains, your phone is an important tool. There you have all your maps, and if something happens, you will need a phone to call for help. In general, it is difficult to predict what to expect during hiking. That’s why charging gadgets during hiking is a very important topic, even if it’s a one-day hike.

Power bank

The easiest way to charge your gadgets is a power bank. It can charge all major devices that have an access to USB. The main indicator when choosing a power bank is the battery capacity, which is measured in milliapmeres per hour – mAh. The larger the capacity, the better. However, do not forget about the weight and size of the power bank. The larger the battery capacity, the heavier your power bank will be. Usually 10.000 mAh is enough to charge a phone with a 4.000 mAh battery twice.

Also note the loss of energy, that can happen due to fuses and adapters of a power bank. In addition to capacity, pay attention to an output current, as the charging speed of the power bank depends on it.

The standard indicator is a power connector with a capacity of 1 ampere per hour, but there can be several, one of which is 2, 2.5 or even 3 amperes per hour. Also calculate how many devices you plan to charge. If you will only charge a smartphone, it is enough to have a power bank with one USB port. But if you have more devices, or your friend’s smartphone also needs to be charged, then it’s better to buy a power bank with two or more USB connectors. If you like outdoor activities and are often in extreme situations in nature, then your power bank should also be ready for extreme conditions. It is better to choose a waterproof power bank, with metal case, and with rubber plugs for connectors to protect them from water and dust.

Charging gadgets during hiking

One more tip related to power banks. It is advisable to have several power banks. It is better to have two 7.000 mAh power banks than one large, as they can be damaged, broken or discharged from the cold. In these cases it is always good to have a spare option.

Power banks have one flaw: they operate at a voltage of 3.7 V. It means that a number of devices will be impossible to charge without special adapters. They add weight and take up extra space in your backpack. Therefore, it is better to purchase spare batteries for the photo camera and walkie-talkies, and always keep them charged in your backpack. In the case of flashlights it is advisable to purchase the ones with disposable batteries, AA or AAA type. You can also purchase rechargeable batteries of these sizes, but in any case, be sure to stock up on a few disposable batteries.

Solar chargers

As for solar chargers, their effectiveness is a bit controversial, since compact and lightweight panels that are convenient to carry in a backpack do not always provide enough power and direct current to charge devices. Along with them you must also have an intermediate battery – a power bank, which can charge from such an unstable power source. The batteries of smartphones and other gadgets are simpler, and with a low current they may not charge at all, or will charge very slowly. This whole system can make your backpack one kilogram heavier. Therefore, you should think carefully about whether you need a solar charger, or not? If your trip does not last a week or more, then it is pointless to have solar chargers with you. They come in different capacities, ranging from 0.5 to 75 Watts.

It will be realistic to have a solar charger in your backpack with a maximum power of 20-25 watt. More powerful panels will be too heavy. You can take such panels with you to long camping trips, when there will be various devices in the camp and you will have a relatively passive rest. Remember also that the power of the solar charger is directly dependent on the sun. It should be directed towards the sun with its entire surface. To provide a maximum power, there should be a strong sun and cloudless sky. The power also depends on geographic location. In Yerevan it will be easier to get more power, than in Helsinki, for example.

How to save battery?

And now some tips on how to save the battery of your gadgets.

Protect all devices and batteries from the cold. Wrap them in warm clothes and in waterproof bags so that they do not get wet. Wet clothes will cool gadgets faster.
All phones, tablets and photo cameras have power saving mode. Activate this mode so that your gadgets consume less power.
In the mountains there is mostly no radio coverage. And in the absence of network, the phone increases the antenna power in order to find a network. Because of this phone discharges faster. Therefore, put your phone in an airplane mode. This mode turns off the antenna and other wireless modules, which significantly extends the battery’s life. It’s possible to stay in the mountains for three days without recharging your phone, using only GPS and sometimes a camera. In urban conditions, the same phone will barely last two days.

Your smartphone or any other device may suddenly discharge. Do not despair. Move it to a warm place: tent, under warm clothes in a backpack, or under a jacket. Most likely the battery just froze and after warming up it can work for some time, until it’s completely discharged.
Have a spare phone with you. Take your old Nokia or Sony Ericsson phones with buttons that hide in some far corner of your closet. Everyone knows that these phones can last for weeks. Here they will be very needed.
And finally, prioritize everything. Use your smartphone only if it’s necessary: don’t play games, don’t watch movies; turn off internet, social media, work emails. You may need your phone in case of emergency, or when you need to call for help.

A hiking flashlight, as well as a first-aid kit, should always be in our hiking backpack. We always say that even if the trip does not last a whole day, it is necessary to have hiking flashlight with you. After all, unforeseen cases may occur, and you will have to continue the journey in the dark.

Flashlights can be divided into three types:

Manual
Forehead
Camping

The most important ones for hikers are headlamps. These flashlights are very convenient, as your hands remain free, and the light is always directed forward.

Although not necessary, you can bring spare manual flashlight in order to carry out some of the work. A camping lamp is a big equipment designed for camps. It is much larger, heavier, and therefore not suitable for storage in a backpack.

Headlamp Criteria

*Power

Power is measured in lumens. The larger it is the better. However, keep in mind that powerful flashlights consume more energy and discharge quickly. For regular hikes, a flashlight with a capacity of 200 to 300 lumens will be enough. If possible, you can choose a more powerful flashlight, but it will cost more. The power of light depends on the voltage in the battery. Therefore, when the battery discharges, the brightness of the light also drops.

Modern flashlights have an electric power regulation system, so that the flashlight gives a stable, medium brightness, regardless of the battery charge. Most of hiking flashlights have three brightness modes: strong, weak and strobe. A strobe is a blinking light that gives a sign to indicate your place, for example, when you need to attract the attention of rescuers.

*Range of a light stream

This criterion depends on the power of the flashlight. However, a more powerful flashlight does not always mean that it will necessarily throw a strong stream of light into the distance. This criterion shows the maximum distance at which the flashlight provides the minimum visible illumination. However, the main beam is not always needed. You must have a wide, diffused light while walking, while lighting a map, working in a camp, or being in a tent. If the light is concentrated at one point, you will not be able to illuminate the entire territory, and with a strong light, you can dazzle yourself and people nearby. To solve this problem, modern flashlights have several lighting modes: close, far and combined.

High-quality headlamps, such as Petzl or Black Diamond, have an intelligent system that automatically changes the type of lighting, depending on the position of the head. During mountaineering or long-term trekking, strong high beams are a necessity. In these conditions, the combined version is most often used. Chinese lanterns have a lens that adjusts the focus range, which works like a camera lens. This is the easiest option, with which you can precisely control the direction of light.

However, this option is already outdated. Such lanterns are heavy, the light loses its power in the distance, and the lens quickly breaks from impacts. You can find these lanterns in any hunting store and at various fairs. If you are looking for a budget option, choose this flashlight. But if you have the opportunity, choose specialized branded headlamps. The quality of such flashlights is better, they are more comfortable and have various additional features designed specifically for hikers and climbers.

*Weight

The lighter the hiking flashlight, the less opportunities it has, and vice versa. If you do not participate in long multi-day trekking, then give preference to simpler models. We will talk about better models later.

*Power type

Flashlights are either rechargeable or with disposable AA or AAA batteries. Although rechargeable flashlights last longer and there is no need to buy new batteries every time, there may be problems charging them in the mountains. Therefore, it is better to give preference to disposable batteries and carry a few spare batteries with you. Models that are more expensive combine these two options. For example, Petzl has flashlights that are powered by standard AA batteries and a special Core battery.

Lights also differ in battery location. There is an option in which the batteries are located in a common section with a flashlight, and an option with a separate external unit that is attached to the back of the head. The first option is lightweight and does not take up much space. The second option is convenient, because the weight is evenly distributed over the head, and it has a more capacious battery. An external unit can also be placed inside a jacket or backpack, which will protect it from the cold and from being quickly discharged.

*Protection

The hiking flashlight can have a protection from humidity, water and dust. The level of protection is measured in IPX. Remember, the higher the number, the better the flashlight is protected. This means that IPX1 will protect the flashlight from water drops, IPX4 from rain, or if water spills on the flashlight. IPX7 can be immersed in water to a depth of 1-1.5 m for 30 minutes. If the hiking flashlight gets wet, it is advisable to turn it off, remove the batteries and dry in a ventilated space, but not in direct sunlight.

*Red light

Some flashlights have extra red light. Since red light has the longest waves, and it transmits a stable and calm light. It is very convenient to illuminate the tent with this light. Red light does not blind or damage the eyes; it transfers stable and diffused light. It is also convenient during night observations of animals, since most of them do not see the red color.

Summing up everything written, we can say that if you rarely go hiking, do not make difficult ascents or multi-day trekking, then you do not need to think long. Choose an affordable option that will provide stable light of 100-200 lumens and replaceable batteries. In any case, we advise you to choose a specialized branded hiking flashlight. Do not buy flashlights of unknown origin, since the technical properties written on them are usually incorrect, the details have poor quality, and the LED quickly fails. Batteries run out faster because the power consumption is not optimized, and there are a number of similar disadvantages.

A simple but high-quality hiking flashlight in online stores costs 10,000-12,000 drams. If you already have experience in hiking, if you want to make more trips and gain experience, or if you choose longer routes, then it is likely that you will walk for a long time in the dark. Therefore, you need to choose a higher quality flashlight, with additional features, and with a more powerful light and battery.

Remember one important thing!

A flashlight, like a weapon, should always be at hand, always charged and ready to go. You must always have spare batteries. When arriving home, check the battery charge and, if necessary, change or recharge it. Never remove the flashlight from your backpack or leave it elsewhere! Because it is possible that you will forget the flashlight on the very day when you will need it.

You probably will not believe this, but even socks for hiking are required to be special. You must choose hiking socks carefully. Thermo socks are synthetic, made of polyamide, polyester, nylon, elastane. The fabric of hiking socks is seamless. Sometimes merino wool fabrics are used to provide maximum thermal insulation. Hiking socks have three functions:

Compression

Efficient sweat removal

Hiking socks should effectively remove sweat from your feet. The principle is the same as with thermal underwear. Synthetic fabric absorbs sweat drops and distributes them over the maximum surface area, making sweat remove as fast as possible. Besides that, the fabric of high-quality thermal socks has special lines, which guide sweat steam up and make it leave the shoes much quicker. Many of people are familiar with the unpleasant feeling, when the socks are wet and feet start to freeze. Or when in hot weather socks roll down and it becomes very muggy for feet. Wet feet are the main cause of frostbite. That’s why it is important to keep your feet dry.

There are many options from which you can choose, depending on the place and purpose. Also, remember that thicker not always means warmer. For example, ski socks come in a finer fabric, because ski boots have to sit very precisely on the feet. And socks for trekking and mountaineering can be a bit thicker, regardless of thermal properties, to create an intermediate buffer space between feet and boots. It is an important feature during descent, which will prevent your toes from rubbing.

Temperature regulation

Thermal properties depend on the density of the fabric. Usually on the certain parts of the socks there are extra insulations from warmer fabric. They are designed for more efficient thermal insulation. In socks that are designed for especially cold conditions, merino wool is added to the fabric. It significantly increases thermal insulation properties and minimally affects breathable properties of socks. The label of hiking socks indicates weather conditions that they are intended for. Pay attention to the label when choosing hiking socks.

Compression

Compression properties of socks are very important. Fabric compresses muscles in certain parts of socks, which helps to regulate blood circulation. Seamless fabric makes socks more durable and comfortable. Almost all of the modern thermal socks are made this way. Such socks are often used by runners, athletes, triathletes. In these sports, joints and muscles are heavily loaded, therefore additional compression fabric is needed, to avoid injuries and prevent legs from getting tired quickly. It is especially important to have compression in heels and feet.

Hiking socks have left and right sides, which are designed to give the most anatomical shape to feet. It is important to choose the right size of socks. If they are small, your feet will be cramped, it will be uncomfortable to move, and also small socks will block blood circulation. Care

Hiking socks can be washed in washing machine, just like thermal underwear. However there are several nuances. Water should not be too hot, maximum 40-50 degrees. Wash them in a delicate mode, instead of powder use washing gel. Do not use bleaches and conditioners. After washing, do not squeeze them and don’t put them into the dryer. Just hang them wet and let them dry on their own.

You have probably already bought hiking boots, a jacket, a backpack, and trousers. But do not forget about the importance of hiking gloves. Remember that during hypothermia, the body begins to freeze precisely from the limbs. So, appropriate hand protection is extremely important. Although choosing hiking gloves is easier than choosing boots and a backpack, there are a few nuances you need to know when choosing gloves.

Glove functions

Hiking gloves have two functions – protective and warming.

During climbing, exploring the cave or just during summer hikes, you can wear arm-warmer kind of gloves made of thin fabric, with protective inserts. Cycling gloves or those worn by special units can be suitable. They will protect your hands from scratches and sunstroke.

To protect your hands from the cold, wind, and from getting wet, you need to approach more seriously. First, it is advisable to have several pairs of gloves of different thicknesses with you. One pair of gloves can be thin, made of fleece, or other similar material (for example, softshell). This will be the first layer. These gloves should provide some warmth, be soft and thin, so as not to restrain the movement of your fingers and allow you to freely perform various actions. It is advisable that these gloves have protective features against moisture and do not get wet immediately after touching wet surfaces and snow.

Warm Hiking Gloves

For especially cold conditions, you need to take thick and very warm hiking gloves. Most often, these gloves have two layers that are separated from each other. The inner layer can be a feather, wool, fleece, or other synthetic insulators. The outer layer is made of waterproof polyester. Leather, Cordura, and other durable fabrics are also common.

Hiking gloves should have the following features:

Membrane layer.
Leather reinforcement on the palm for added protection against damage.
Opening zippers, under which there is a mesh for increased ventilation in hot weather.
Ropes connecting the gloves to remove and leave them hanging if necessary, instead of opening and closing the backpack every time.
A special layer on the index and thumb, to which the smartphone screens are sensitive. Thus, you can use the phone while wearing thick gloves.

Mittens

So which ones are better – warm gloves or mittens? This is a debatable point since both have their good and bad sides. Gloves must be selected by their importance.

Mittens are also different:

Thin fleece mittens
Lightweight but very warm feather mittens
Thick mittens with waterproof coating

The advantage of mittens is that all fingers are in one common space, they are free, and nothing presses on them. This way they remain much warmer. Therefore, you can choose warm mittens with greater thermal insulation. However, nothing can be done in mittens other than holding trekking poles or, for example, ice-axe. Relatively light but warm gloves should be worn under the mittens so that you can remove the mittens if necessary and do the work with gloves.

During hiking in Armenia, even in winter (at an altitude of up to 3000 m), there are no such conditions that you need to wear mittens. You may need them if you are planning to climb Aragats or Azhdahak during the calendar winter. In other cases, durable, waterproof, and warm gloves will be enough.

Mittens may be needed while climbing Mount Ararat, as well as during more difficult ascents. In any case, the feather mittens are intended for high-mountain climbing in extremely cold conditions. We advise you to choose thinner mittens made of very durable fabric that can be worn over gloves.

Regardless of which gloves or mittens you choose, always bring a spare pair with you, as if you get wet, gloves will freeze your hands instantly.

Why do We Need Trekking Poles?

Trekking poles are special walking sticks for those who are doing active sports or tourism. People have always used walking sticks: disabled people, shepherds, and aristocrats of the 19^th century. A cane is also popular in works of the fantasy genre, when an old wizard walks with a large cane in his hand. People realized that for long walks they need to create an additional point of support in order to more efficiently distribute weight and relieve stress from the legs.

The Leki Company presented trekking poles in their modern form in 1974. They named the model “Makalu” after the famous mountain. After that, many different companies started to produce trekking poles. They became very popular throughout the world and to this day continue to be one of the most important parts of the hiker’s and mountaineer’s equipment.

Why do You Need Trekking poles?

Walking with a heavy backpack is a huge pressure on your spine and legs. Especially when walking on slopes, it is very difficult to maintain balance, relying on only two points – the legs. The muscles of the legs and back are very tense. Because of this, you quickly get tired. When walking, trekking poles distribute part of the load on the arms and thereby relieve tension in the legs and spine.

While walking with trekking poles you will always have the third supporting point. This helps you to keep the balance of your body even better. Moreover, during the pauses you can have rest by leaning on your poles.

Perhaps trekking poles are not necessary for one-day short hikes. However, during multi-day difficult trekking, when you have a heavy backpack, they are irreplaceable. Many people think that trekking poles are not obligatory, that they are unnecessary and they disturb them. We assure you that it is not true. Of course, you have to get used to walking with poles in order to control the movement of your hands and feet simultaneously. However, once you get used to them, you will see how they help you with walking.

Types of Trekking Poles

Traditional trekking poles can be telescoping, meaning that they have some segments that can be adjusted in length.

The relatively new folding poles are similar to tent poles. The individual parts are attached to each other with an elastic rope, which stretches and connects these parts. This variant was originally intended for Nordic walking and light hikes. However, trekking poles gradually became widely spread among alpinists and hikers due to their light weight.

However, these poles have one disadvantage – you cannot control their size. This is very important especially during mountain hikes, when you have to control the height of the poles depending on the declivity. That is why we suggest choosing telescopic trekking poles.

Types of locks and grips

The locks can be with a screw or valve.

The screw lock has a wedge-shaped mechanism on the inside, almost like wall plugs. This is an old mechanism with almost no advantage over valves. The snow may freeze inside such mechanism and make it difficult to control your poles. While you are walking, the poles can unfold. In addition, they are heavier.

The trekking poles with valve locks are much easier to adjust, even with gloves. They are lighter, more reliable and durable. It is better to choose such trekking poles.

Unlike the ski poles, trekking poles can be longer, so you can hold them in different positions. These poles can also have additional grips. It is very convenient during long hikes, especially when you are going down the slopes of the mountain and cannot change the length of the poles. In this case, you can control your poles by just changing the position of your hands. You should control the length of the poles in a way that your elbows and forearms form a 90° angle. This position is the most effective and convenient.

Trekking poles are mainly made of aluminum alloy or carbon fiber. CFRP provides the same durability, but weights incomparably less. However, it is more expensive. If you are going to take short hikes, you do not need to buy poles made of carbon. However, if you are planning to take part in a long and difficult trekking you will certainly need them.

Usually the grips for poles are made of rubber, natural cork, neoprene, polyurethane or EVA foam. The grips made of cork, neoprene and EVA foam are more comfortable. Due to their soft and porous surface, they keep you warm in winter and absorb sweat in summer. Cork is the best option as it breathes well and always keeps your hands dry. However, you should be attentive, because in cheap models they use a lot of glue. That is why they lose their breathing functions. If it is possible, try to buy a more expensive model.

The Structure of Trekking poles

Trekking poles usually have special round tips at the bottom. They prevent your trekking poles from being stuck in snow or sand. There are bigger disks for snowy surfaces, in order to distribute the weight correctly. Small tips are usually used for sand and other simpler conditions.

The tips of poles are usually made of strong alloy, such as cobalt and wolfram. The tip should be strong and stable towards strikes. The serrated appearance provides a firm grip. After the tip wears out, you need to change the poles or their tips if they are replaceable, as it is unacceptable to use such poles.

Trekking poles sometimes have depreciation system, in order to reduce pressure when you are leaning on the poles. During long hikes, your hands may get tired. This depreciation system eases the load and your hands do not hurt as much. However, we should note that this system makes your poles heavier.

Many mountaineers do not like this type of poles. They say that due to its depreciation system, they cannot feel the ground and they waste more energy.
