As the climate of Armenia is quite mild, our country is ideal for winter hiking. However, many guests of Armenia do not know what they can do here in wintertime besides skiing. That’s why we have developed a special New Year hike in Armenia for you to imagine a wealth of choice you have.

Day 1: Yerevan

Our staff will meet you at the airport and help you check into a hotel. Next step is a walking tour along Yerevan, during which you will see the sights of the Armenian capital.

Day 2: Garni Pagan Temple and Symphony of Stones

You will first visit the Geghard monastery complex, carved right into the rock. Then – the pagan temple of Garni, which is dedicated to Mithra, the God of Sun. After visiting the temple the group will descend into the gorge of the Azat River, where the natural monument “Symphony of Stones” is located. It consists of many hexagonal basalt columns of volcanic origin.

A visit to the Khosrov State Reserve is next . From the Symphony of Stones the group will go to the monastery complex of Havuts Tar (XI century). You will definitely enjoy a stunning view of the Azat River gorge from the top on which the monastery is located.

Day 3: High mountain fortress

On the third day we will go to the south of Armenia to see the legendary Khor Virap temple (IV century). The name of Saint Gregory the Illuminator is closely connected with it. Legend has it that Saint Gregory was imprisoned in an underground prison for 13 years by decree of the pagan king. In addition, the Khor Virap temple is located on a hill from where Mount Ararat is visible.

After leaving this holy place and reaching the village of Artabuink, the group will hike to the high mountain fortress. This fortress of the 5th century is one of the best preserved architectural monuments of Armenia. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs. The height of its powerful walls with semicircular towers is 8-10 meters, and the width is 3-4 meters. There are many legends and stories about this fortress associated with the name of one of the great Armenian kings.

We will go to the Syunik region in the evening.

Day 4: Vorotan Gorge

We will go down to the Vorotan Gorge to see a number of abandoned villages with the houses carved into the rock.

Let’s continue our journey to one of the most visited places in Syunik – the village of Old Khndzoresk,which is known with its cave houses and a 160 meter long suspension bridge.This is a mountain settlement, whose inhabitants literally carved out their houses in solid stone. In the 1950s, the bulk of the population was resettled to a new location, and the village itself gradually became an object of tourist attention.

Day 5: Wings of Tatev and Noravank Monastery

We will pass the deep Vorotan Gorge by the world’s longest cableway that will take us to the famous Tatev Monastery.

The Wings of Tatev cableway is registered in the Guinness World Records. It was not only the length of the road that was record-breaking (5,752 meters), but also construction time (only 10 months). It passes over the Vorotan River gorge and connects two villages – Halidzor and Tatev. The highest point of the cable car lift is 320 meters from the ground above the Vorotan River.

After visiting the Tatev Monastery – one of the XIV-XV centuries Armenia’s centers of culture, science and education – we will descend into the Vorotan Gorge again. Let’s see the Great Hermitage of Tatev where about 700 monks lived. Our group’s next stop is the Devil‘s Bridge.

Then you will have the opportunity to see the ancient stone complex of Carahunge (Zorats Karer), which purpose of construction is still being discussed among scientists. Some say Carahunge is the oldest observatory in the world, others call it a place of worship where sacrifices were made.

Noravank Monastery

We will also visit the Noravank Monastery, known also as the Red Monastery. Its name origins from the color of the mountain the monastery is located on. In addition, the monastery is famous for its unique bas-relief depicting God.

Day 6: Sunny Yerevan

You still have time to walk around Yerevan on the last day of the tour. The Vernissage market is two steps far from the Republic Square. You can find everything that you want there.

During these two days in Tavush region of Armenia, you will go back to Paleolithic period and live like a caveman in a real cave. Well…not exactly like in Paleolithic times, of course, but anyway you will experience the life in a cave, with no electricity, no internet connection, no shower… nothing, just the cave, breathtaking nature and you. The sun and the moon will light your way, the sounds of nature will be your interlocutors, and the refreshing waters of the river will be your shower.

This is a perfect way to merge with nature and find the natural meditative state of your mind.

Day 1: A night in the cave

In the morning, we will pick you up at your hotel/apartment and together we will start our unique journey. On our way, we will stop near Lake Sevan and admire the eternal beauty of the lake. Afterwards we will continue our way to the Yenokavan village and prepare for the hike. Before the hike, you will have an opportunity to try the zipline. Then we will go down the Khachaghbyur gorge and find ourselves in a completely different world called Lastiver. We will spend some time around the bonfire and hike up to the caves.

Day 2: Hike to the village Okon

In the morning after breakfast, we will start a beautiful hike through the dense forests of Ijevan. We will visit the place called Okon, which used to be a lively village with its own school and a church. Now only few families live in the area that can hardly be called a village. The church – Okonavank, is still standing there, but you cannot find the school anymore. All the way from the caves to Okon, we will walk along narrow paths surrounded by huge trees and deep gorges. We will enjoy every step and get a breath of fresh air.

Mount Artanish is an ideal option for a winter ascent in Armenia, as it has a low altitude and beautiful landscapes. The summit of the mountain is the only place from where you can clearly see the confluence of Greater and Lesser Sevan.

We start the ascent near the Shoghakat village, from an altitude of 1920 m above sea level. The relative altitude is 540 m.

After enjoying the beautiful views and having a little rest, we will descend to Artanish peninsula and continue our hike along the shore of the Lake Sevan.

The Annual Tradition

Every winter, the team of Armenian Geographic climbs Mount Artanish, then descends to the lake and prepares for a refreshing swim in the icy-cold waters of Sevan.

Smbataberd is one of the most-visited hiking destinations in summer and there is nothing quite as magical as experiencing the famous summer hike when it is covered with snow. Off-season hiking is a best way to see the trail in a whole new light and likely with a lot less people.

Smbataberd is an impregnable fortress of the 5th century, surrounded on three sides by steep slopes, which go down into the gorge, where the rivers Artabuyn and Yeghegis flow.

From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Teksar, which is breathtaking in winter.

At the end of the hike, we will go down to the Yeghegis village and see the Zorats church, which is the only church in Armenia to have an open air altar.

Armenia is an ideal country for winter hikes, especially for mountain lovers. Many people cannot imagine what one should do in Armenia in winter, except ski holidays. We made this tour to show you the great variety of winter Armenia destinations. We offer you to walk through snowy and fairy forests, gorges, villages, monasteries. You can even easily climb a mountain, as the climate is very mild here, and the mountain that we chose for the following tour is not so high and is perfect for winter hike.

Day 1: Yerevan

Meeting the group at the airport and transfer to the hotel. After meeting each other, we will go on a city tour. During the walking tour, we will explore the city architecture, and see the landmarks, which are appear to be the hallmark of Armenia.

Day 2: On the Road to South Armenia

In the morning of the second day, we will move to the South Armenia. On our way, we will see the famous and significant temple – Khor Virap. The temple is built on the deep pit, where on the 14th century Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for about 13 years. We will go down there and try to feel the spirit of the past. Khor Virap is also known for its beautiful view of Mount Ararat.

Then we will go down to the canyon, where the divine beauty of the Hell’s Canyon will be waiting for us.

We will walk along the river and admire the beauty and power of the massive rocks. During our journey, we will see how the canyon changes its views all the time.

Day 3: An Alpine Fortress on the Edge of the Cliff

Chronologically walking through history, we appear in the 5th century, when one of the best-preserved fortresses of Armenia was built. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs and has strong walls with semicircular towers with the height of 8-10 meters and the width of 3-4 meters. There are many stories and legends about this fortress associated with the name of one of the great Armenian kings. From here, we can clearly see the Mount Teksar. After exploring the fortress, we will continue our trip to a village, which once was a fortified medieval town.

In the evening, we will go to Syunik region.

Day 4: Phantoms of Vorotan Gorge

In the morning, we will go down to the Vorotan Gorge, where we will see several abandoned villages with big houses carved into the rock. After seeing all this, you can easily imagine how people once lived in the caves.

We will continue traveling through time and head to the Old Khndzoresk village. Old Khndzoresk – a village spread over about 3 km at the slopes of the deep gorge, was one of the most populous villages of Syunik region. In the 20 century, the settlement was moved to the top of the cliff. One can reach Old Khndzoresk only by the 160 meters long rocking suspension bridge, passing over a deep gorge. The bridge itself is a landmark and attracts not only tourist, but the local people as well.

Day 5: «Wings of Tatev» and Noravank Monastery

In the morning we will cross the deep Vorotan Gorge on the world’s longest ropeway, which will bring us to the famous Tatev Monastery.

“Wings of Tatev” was recorded by Guiness World Records as the world’s longest non-stop double track cable car. The record was not only the length 5 752 meters, but the construction time as well – only 10 months. The ropeway is passing over the Vorotan River Gorge and connecting two villages – Halidzor and Tatev. At its highest point over the gorge, the car travels 320 m above ground level.

Next, we will go to the famous Carahunge. Until now, the scientists have not figured out why it was built. Some scientists consider that Carahunge is the world’s oldest astronomical observatory, but some of them are against that idea and think that Carahunge is a place of power, and in ancient times, people made sacrifices to the gods here.

Noravank Monastery

Passing through the centuries, we will reach, let’s say, the Late Middle Ages and visit the Noravank Monastery, which the locals also call the Red Monastery. The gorge where the monastery is situated is known for its steep red cliffs, towering behind the monastery. In Soviet times, the championship of rock climbing was held here. Noravank is also known for its bas-relief where the image of God is.

Day 6: Pagan Temple and Symphony of Stones

In the morning, we will visit the Geghard monastery complex, which was carved right into the rock. Then we will go to the pagan temple of Garni, which is one of the most famous monuments of pagan period and is dedicated to the god of sun Mithras. The pagan temple remained intact even after the adoption of Christianity in 301. After observing the temple, we will go down to the gorge of river Azat, where a natural monument is situated known as Symphony of Stones. These are vertical, upright cliffs, which are a huge number of hexagonal basalt columns of volcanic origin.

Day 7: Mount Arteni

Early in the morning, we will go to the foot of Mount Arteni. Arteni is quite big volcano with interesting liparite structure. The mountain is located on the southwestern periphery of Aragats massif in Talin.

After climbing the mountain, we will go to Kakheni castle, which was built during the reign of the Kamsarakans. Kakheni is one of the well-preserved fortresses in Armenia.

Day 8: Winter’s Fairytale

In the morning, we will head to the timeless treasure, to the eternal and beautiful Lake Sevan. The lake is located at an altitude of 1900 meters. People call it the pearl of Armenian mountains, and this metaphor reflects the whole essence of the attitude to Lake Sevan. We will visit the Sevanavank Monastery, which is located on the Sevan peninsula.

Then we will go to the Tavush region. If there are participants interested in trying the ‘zipline’ experience, we will accommodate that activity first. Afterward, we will continue our journey along the picturesque Khachaghbyur gorge, leading us to the enchanting destination known as Lastiver. We will see small tree houses, a waterfall, and caves, where hermits used to live. This place looks wonderful in any season.

Day 9: An impregnable fortress

Through dense forests of Tavush we will head to the impregnable Girl’s Fortress, which used to be one of the most significant fortresses in Armenia. During our trip, we will see the remained walls of the fortress, which occupy a big territory. During the hike, we will tell you a beautiful legend connected with this fortress.

Day 1

Through dense forests of Tavush we will head to the impregnable Girl’s Fortress, which used to be one of the most significant fortresses in Armenia. During our trip, we will see the remaining walls of the fortress, which occupy a big territory. During the hike, we will tell you a beautiful legend connected with this fortress.

Day 2

On this day we will drive to Shamshadin, which locals call the Real Tavush. At the beginning we’ll visit the Srvegh monastery hidden in the forests. The monastery was built in the 13-th century. After examining Srvegh we will continue to a place called Ghuzani Qar (Ruzan’s stone). This is a huge piece of rock from the top of which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Shamshadin. We’ll hike up to the top and return. The way up will take some 30 mins of walking. There are several legends connected to this place. One of them has it, that there was a young girl called Ruzan, who didn’t want to get caught by a Persian Shah, so she climbed up to this huge rock and jumped off a cliff. After this the rock was named after her.

Winter holidays in Armenia

Then we will continue to another monastery hidden in the forests. We will have a small hike to Kaptavank monastery from the 12-th century. It is a perfect example of harmony of nature and architecture.From the former monastery complex only one church is preserved.

We’ll end the day at our cozy guesthouse in Dilijan.

Day 3

In the morning, after breakfast, we’ll head to Yenokavan, from where we’ll start our hike to Okonavank monastery.

Okonavank is located in the upper stream of Khachaghbyur gorge. The hiking trail of Okanavank is very beautiful, especially in winter. The trail goes through dense forests of Ijevan, through deep and breathtaking gorges and ends at Okonavank monastery.

Hiking to Okonavank

Length of the hike to Okonavanq is 18 km and passes alongside the whole Khachaghbyur gorge.

Winter can be extremely different at this place. One year it can be fully covered with snow, the other year it feels like spring in the middle of winter. You can see the difference in the photos above.

Day 4

In the morning we will leave our guesthouse in Dilijan and move to Sevan lake, where we will ascend the Mount Artanish.

We start the ascent near the Shoghakat village, from an altitude of 1920 m above sea level. The relative altitude is 540 m.

After enjoying the beautiful views and having a little rest, we will descend to Artanish peninsula and continue our hike along the shore of the Lake Sevan.
