It is located in Ararat region, on the slopes of the mountain ranges of Geghama, Tasanord, Yeranos, Irits and Khosrovasar mountains, in the basins of the Azat and Vedi rivers. Occupies an area of \u200b\u200b27,000 hectares. About 64% of the area is occupied by drought-loving plants, 16% by forests, and 20% of the area by shrubs. The sparse forests of juniper and oak are the gems of this State Reserve. The latter are followed by regular, round-leafed ash, sorbus, maple and different types of pear trees. There are many juniper-sorbus, juniper-pear and juniper-hackberry mixed forests in the territory of this State Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The area is noted for its rich diversity of fauna which encapsulates more than 1500 species. The most famous ones are: among fishes, the brown trout, among birds the white vulture, and among mammals the mouflon, <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/bezoar_goat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bezoar goat<\/a><\/span>, brown bear, long-eared hedgehog, and leopard.<\/p>\n<p>There are many historical and natural monuments in the territory of the <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/hike-in-specially-protected-areas-of-armenia-10-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specially protected area.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Havuts Tar Monastery<\/h3>\n<p>Havuts Tar monastery used to be one of the religious and cultural centers of medieval Armenia. The monastery was injured during the earthquake in 1679 and was finally destroyed from the earthquake of Akori in 1840. Two of them were called after Armenian pagan gods Astghik and Vahagn.<br \/>\nAccording to legend goddess Astghik used to have a bath under that waterfall every evening. But one day a dragon captures Astghik and after that Love and Beauty disappeared from the world.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hiking to Vahagni waterfall \/ Khosrov reserve -  \u0531\u0580\u0577\u0561\u057e \u0564\u0565\u057a\u056b \u054e\u0561\u0570\u0561\u0563\u0576\u056b \u057b\u0580\u057e\u0565\u056a\u0568 \/ \u053d\u0578\u057d\u0580\u0578\u057e\u056b \u0561\u0580\u0563\u0565\u056c\u0578\u0581\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K4I8WFU5d14?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>But Vahagn, who was known as a dragon slayer, kills the dragon and brings love and beauty back with Astghik.<br \/>\nSo afterwards these waterfalls were called Astghik and Vahagn.<\/p>\n<h3>Aghjots Monastery<\/h3>\n<p>Its a monastery complex in the territory of Khosrov Reserve. Is located 7 km south from Geghard. The complex consists of churches, gavit (narthex), some monastic buildings and a cemetery. The biggest one of the churches is called St Poghos-Petros. The monastery was destroyed from earthquakes many times.
