There are about 100 lakes and ponds in the Territory of Armenia all of which are freshwater. The lakes vary by their genesis. The area is rich in lakes of glacial (Qar, Lesing), volcanic (Lake Akna) and landslide (Lake Parz) origin. In the Armenian highland there is a type of lakes that you will not find anywhere else in the Middle East – a crater lake. Our mountains have volcanic peaks which craters are filled with water. These lakes are preserved year round.
