{"id":85268,"date":"2022-12-12T16:45:56","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T12:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/ascent-to-mount-damavand\/"},"modified":"2024-02-05T16:24:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T12:24:58","slug":"ascent-to-mount-damavand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/ascent-to-mount-damavand\/","title":{"rendered":"Damavand: Ascent of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountains of the Armenian Highlands: Ararat (5165 m), <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/ascent-to-mount-sabalan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sabalan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (4811 m), Aragats (4090 m) and<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/mount_sipan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sipan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (4058 m), as well as the Greater Caucasus Mountains: <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/mount-kazbek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kazbek<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (5047 m) and <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/mount-elbrus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elbrus<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (5642 m) are widely popular among fans of mountain tourism. The Armenian Geographic team has made many trips to the mountains and implemented a number of projects, such as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/mern-e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ours<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; and &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/tsovu-bolor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsovu <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolor<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (&#8220;Around the Sea&#8221;) over the 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A completely new stage in the development of mountain tourism in Armenia began on July 7, 2022. On this day, our group of 25 people completed the ascent to the top of Mount Damavand (5610 m), the highest dormant volcano in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ascent was a result of our work over the past years. The result may be expressed in the following words: 10 years of productive work, 10 years of valuable experience, 10 years of strong friendship and mutual trust.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/seven-volcanoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Volcanic Seven Summits Project<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3>25 Armenians on the top of Damavand<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s begin the story with the fact that our Iranian guides were not sure if all of us, 25 people, were able to complete the ascent. Of course, that prediction did not stop us. Our team of 25 members returned 3 days later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/hrachya_ivanyan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hrach Ara-Ivanyan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a member of the ArmGeo team, who had reached some mountain peaks with the guys did not share the guides\u2019 skepticism:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI knew the guide was underestimating us. I was sure we would succeed in our ascent even before we began it. This confidence stayed with me all the way. The guide probably thought we were too self-confident and underestimated the difficulty of the ascent. But we succeeded, so the guide was wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for Lena Zakarian, the guide\u2019s mistrust even was a source of motivation:<em>\u201cI was one of those people whom the local guide was skeptical about, but his words only spurred me on.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Shortly before the ascent to Damavand<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people in our group had completed the ascent to the summit of Sabalan (4811 m), the second highest mountain among the mountains of the Armenian Highlands, literally 2 weeks before. Of course, this achievement did much to strengthen their resolve.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/ascent-to-mount-sabalan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sabalan: the story of the ascent<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also should be mentioned that guys had been preparing for the ascent to Damavand during several years by regularly participating in some mountain hikes and training. <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/ani-hakobyan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ani Hakopyan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the upcoming ascent very seriously: <em>\u201cAlthough I had participated in many hikes, trained hard and even passed a special medical examination, I was still anxious.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72732\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72732\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72732\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=1200%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Damavand\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=1030%2C687&amp;ssl=1 1030w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=705%2C470&amp;ssl=1 705w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.armgeo.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B5%D6%847.jpg?resize=450%2C300&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damavand<\/p><\/div>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damavand became the first five-thousander for Lilit Tonoyan:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI didn\u2019t know what to expect and how my body would react to such a height. The decision to complete the ascent to Damavand after climbing Aragats seemed too daring and risky. But then anxious thoughts went away, giving way to a feeling of self-confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>High Peaks of the Armenian Highlands<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were some experienced hikers among us who had climbed the mountain peaks of the Armenian Highlands, but climbing Damavand became a new stage for them. According to Ani Hakobyan and Lena Zakarian, the main goal of the ascent to the dormant Damavand volcano was \u201cthe desire to challenge oneself\u201d and \u201cto reach the top of the mountain at any cost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/climbing-ararat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ascent to Ararat<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astghik Torosyan had reached the peaks of the four highest mountains of the Armenian Highlands: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn general, mountain tourism may be compared to climbing stairs: you always understand that you may stop halfway or continue climbing from step to step. It all depends on your desire only.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/garnik_poghosyan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garnik Poghosyan<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an experienced hiker, was preparing with great enthusiasm for the ascent to Damavand:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cJust imagine: you are on the top of the highest volcano in Asia, or you visit the capital of Iran to soak up the atmosphere! What an experience!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>July 4th. Mount Damavand Day<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day of our ascent turned out to coincide with a national Iranian holiday, Mount Damavand Day. Hrach Ara-Ivanyan:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cEvents we took part in and people we met in the city of Damavand were incredible! We met thousands of fans of mountain tourism, and the vast majority of them were locals. It was nice to know that many people celebrate Mount Damavand Day by going on a mountain hike or an ascent. It\u2019s also worth mentioning that there were more middle-aged people than young people,\u201d <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Garnik Poghosyan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armgeo.am\/en\/mt-damavand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ascent to Damavand<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lena Zakarian:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cOn the day of acclimatization, I saw people walking like zombies on the way back from the mountain top. It made me remember my ascent to Sabalan. I was sleepy while returning, but I felt relaxed at the same time. As you know, group cohesion is one of the keys to success.<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDamavand was my first five-thousander. When the guys and I finally got up, we hugged tightly and warmly congratulated each other. At this touching moment, my heart was filled with emotions, I even had tears of happiness, I had a feeling of pride in myself and a feeling of unity with the team,\u201d<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u0336\u0336\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Lilit Tonoyan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Damavand: majestic and dangerous<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To imagine how difficult the ascent was, one should consider the features of the terrain in the area of the Damavand volcano with its periodic emissions of sulfurous dust. In addition, we realized that the sulfur stains would not soon be washed off from our clothes. But the sulfur emitted by the volcano was a beautiful yellow-green hue,\u201d <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Lena Zakarian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Astghik Torosyan, the most difficult thing was standing on the peak shrouded in smoke:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI couldn\u2019t control my breathing for almost 15 minutes. Excitement added to the feeling of suffocation. The only thought was pounding in my head: I climbed Damavand! I burst into tears because my emotions were too much. My friends hugged me and congratulated me on reaching the summit. Of course, after that I felt better. Everything looked somehow unreal as if we were on an foreign planet.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>A new ascent to complete and a new challenge to take up<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilit Tonoyan knew from the very beginning that the ascent to Mount Damavand would be a test of strength and a source of new experience for her:<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAt first I was asking myself constantly: why on earth am I into it? The only answer was I want to challenge myself and strengthen my will.
