Therefore, he refuses to capture it by force and decides to wait until people would starve and surrender voluntarily.

A long time passes, but the defense of the fortress remains impregnable. The invader was sure that people in the fortress had access to the nature’s goods and thus could escape starvation. He ordered his army to retreat. Before leaving, he glanced up at that impregnable fortress for the last time and noticed a strange phenomenon: a massive flock of magpies was circling over the fortress.

Kachaghakaberd Fortress

To ensure that his hunches were correct, the invader sends some of his soldiers to check the situation inside the fortress. When soldiers enter the fortress, the flock of magpies gathered inside flies away and the soldiers face horrifying scenery: a ground covered with the corpses of brave men, who chose to starve to death rather than surrender.

Thus, the voracity of the magpies served as a hint for the enemy and became a symbol of betrayal. Because of those magpies, the enemy understood that there are no survivors in the fortress and captured it with no resistance. People named the fortress Kachaghakaberd (Magpie fortress), so that this story can be remembered forever.

The copyright of this article is owned by armgeo.am.
