Petroglyphs of Ukhtasar

Petroglyphs of Ukhtasar

Ukhtasar is an archaeological place in Syunik Region. Since ancient times people used to come here for pilgrimages, to make some rituals and even sacrifices. There are a lot of different opinions concerning the name of this mountain. You can read about it in our article about Ukhtasar.

Ukhtasar / Syunik Highland

At the beginning of our hike, we will drive on 4×4 cars to the place where ancient Armenian petroglyphs have been preserved. Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surfaces by incising, pecking, carving, and abrading. The word petroglyph comes from the Greek words petros meaning “stone” and glyphein meaning “to carve”.  Some petroglyphs seem to depict real events whilst many other examples are apparently entirely abstract. Some theories hold that they may have been a way of transmitting information, while other theories ascribe them a religious or ceremonial purpose.

On the top of mountain Tsghuk

After exploring the Armenian petroglyphs, we will start our ascent to the mountain Tsghuk. Tsghuk is an extinct volcano in Syunik highland. The slopes are divided, full of stone placers, lava flows, also there can be seen glacial traces.

In the evening we will return to Yerevan.
