Day 2: Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries, Odzun Church, Lori Fortress, Dendropark

In the morning we will continue the programme by visiting the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, which were once important educational centres. Both these monasteries which are on UNESCO List of World Heritage date back to the period of the flourishing of Armenian church architecture, namely the time-span between the 10th and 13th centuries.

Our next stop will be at the church of Odzun, where you can see the tombstones of many clergymen as well as a renowned funerary memorial consisting of steps, carved columns and two arches. Then we will visit the fortress of Lori, which used to be a large cultural and trade centre. While walking through its ruins, try to imagine its once noisy streets and busy alleys. In the Middle Ages, the city had approximately 10,000 inhabitants, and various crafts developed here: this has been proved by the discovery of many tools, weapons, jewelry as well as clay, glass and stone vessels from the territory of the fortress.
