Climbing Varag and Nemrut / Armenian Highland

From May 29 to June 2, 2019, we are organizing a hiking tour to Western Armenia (5 days, 4 nights)

We encourage all adventure seekers and mountain lovers to join our trip to the very heart of the Armenian Highland and be the part of the Varag and Nemrut Tour.

We will visit famous and unknown places, communicate with locals, swim in Lake Van, climb the well-known mountain of Vaspurakan-Varag (3200 meters), from the top of which you can enjoy the panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains. Afterwards, we will descend from the top to the monastery of Varagavank, which is situated on the western slope of the mountain. On the next day, we will ascend the Nemrut volcano (2935 meters), where you will see the largest volcanic crater of the Armenian Highland and its picturesque lakes.

Day 1: Yerevan-Ani-Bayazet

After passing Armenian-Georgian and Georgian-Turkish checkpoints, we will head to the lake Tsovak Hyusiso, which is situated at an altitude of 1959 meters above sea level. Then we will visit the medieval Armenian fortified settlement of Ani. In the evening we will return to Bayazet.

Day 2: Van

In the morning, we will drive to Van, walk through the mountain pass of Tondrak to see the waterfall of Berkri. In Van, we will visit the Van Cat Research Center and the fortress of Van, sail to Akhtamar island to see the church of Surb Khach, swim in azure waves of the lake and taste the only fish known to live in its salty waters, tarichi.

Day 3: Climbing Varag

Early in the morning, we will start our ascent to the summit of Varag, the height of which is 3200 meters.

Day 4: Climbing Nemrut

In the morning, we will head to Nemrut. The car will take us up to 2400 meters, after which we will continue our ascent to the peak on foot. There you can enjoy a spectacular view, having the largest crater of the Armenian Highland on one side and Lake Van on the other side. After this we will go down to the crater, swim in the big lake and return to the hotel.

Day 5: Kars-Yerevan

Afterwards, we will head to Kars, one of the historic cities of Western Armenia where we are going to have a city walk and visit the following sights: Arakelots Church, Fort of Kars, the bridge of Vardan and the final point of our trip the ruins of Yeghishe Charent’s house.

In the evening, we will drive back to Yerevan.
