Climbing Mount Ararat / 6-Day Program

Mount Ararat has held a special place in the work of Armenian Geographic since 2014. Over the years, we have guided hundreds of participants towards its summit, many of whom entrusted us with a deeply personal, lifelong dream. We understand both the significance of this journey and the responsibility that comes with leading people to the top.

This focused program is designed for those who have already explored Historic Armenia and now wish to concentrate specifically on climbing Mount Ararat. To keep the itinerary centred on the mountain, visits to Van and Aghtamar are not included.

Day 1: Yerevan – Ani – Dogubayazit

We depart from Yerevan at night and head towards the Armenian–Georgian border. After crossing at the Bavra checkpoint, we continue to the Georgian–Turkish border and cross via the Kartsakhi checkpoint. The road to Kars runs alongside the picturesque lake Tsovak Hyusiso.

Our first stop will be Ani, the former capital of the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia. After exploring Ani, we continue to Dogubayazit.

Overnight at a hotel.

Please bring enough food and water for the first day. We will arrive in Dogubayazit in the evening, and there will be no suitable places to stop for a proper meal along the way.

Day 2: First Camp / 3200 m

We leave the hotel by bus and drive to the foot of Mount Ararat. The vehicle will take us to an altitude of 2,200 metres, where the trekking part of our ascent begins.

Today, we will gain approximately 1,200 metres in elevation as we make our way to the first base camp at 3,400 metres. The trek takes around 4–5 hours, with increasingly impressive views of Mount Ararat and the surrounding landscape along the way.

Our main equipment will be transported by horses, so participants will only need to carry their daypacks.

Overnight stay in tents at the 3,400-metre camp.

Day 3: Second Camp / 4200 m

After breakfast, we begin our ascent from the first base camp at 3,400 metres to the second camp, located at an altitude of 4,200 metres. The trek takes approximately 4–5 hours.

Along the way, we will enjoy impressive views of Little Ararat. As we gain altitude, we will gradually rise above its summit and see the mountain from a rare perspective — from above.

Our main equipment will be transported by horses, so participants will only need to carry their daypacks.

After settling into the tents, we will have an early dinner and rest. We will go to sleep as early as possible, as our summit push begins during the night.

Day 4: The summit of the mountain Ararat / 5165m

At night, we begin our summit push to the top of Mount Ararat. The ascent usually takes around 6–7 hours.

At the summit, we will have time to take in this special moment, capture photographs and share the emotions of reaching the top. The amount of time we can spend there will depend entirely on the weather conditions. In challenging weather, we may stay for only a few minutes, while in favourable conditions, we may be able to remain for up to an hour. The final decision will be made by the lead guide based on the conditions and the safety of the group.

We then descend to the second base camp at 4,200 metres, where we will have a short rest and regain our strength before continuing down to the first camp at 3,400 metres.

Day 5: Returning to Dogubayazit

After the breakfast we will descend to 2200 meters from where the minibus will take us to Dogubayazit. On the second half of the day, after having some rest and a long-awaited shower we will drive to the Ishak Pasha palace. Nearby, we will also see the ancient Armenian fortress of Daroink, overlooking the town.

In the evening we will celebrate our ascent together at a restaurant. Overnight at a hotel in Dogubayazit.

Day 6: Dogubayazit – Kars – Yerevan

After breakfast, we leave Dogubayazıt and begin our journey back to Yerevan.
Along the way, we will stop in Kars and have some time to walk around and experience the atmosphere of the city. Afterwards, we continue through Georgia and return to Yerevan with lasting memories and the greatest achievement of the journey — reaching the summit of Mount Ararat.
