Shaki Waterfall

Shaki Waterfall, one of the most popular places among tourists, is located in the Syunik region, 3 km northwest of the city of Sisian. The height of the waterfall is 18 meters.

Shaki Waterfall

There is an ancient legend about the origin of its name. Once upon a time, an Arab caravan with slaves was traveling from the Gegharkunik region to Mugan. Among the prisoners were young Armenian women whom the slave traders wanted to present to their leader as a gift. When the caravan stopped for a rest near the Vorotan River, the women asked the slavers for permission to swim in its waters. The permission was received.

And then those proud girls, who did not want to live in captivity, suddenly disappeared into the river waves. Among them there was a blue-eyed girl named Shaki, who, however, did not hide in the waters of the Vorotan River, but tried to escape. The slave traders almost captured the brave Shaki, but they were prevented by a miracle that happened before their eyes. Suddenly, a piece of rock rose from the river and hid the girl from her enemies. In honor of this miraculous rescue, the waterfall and the village nearby were named Shaki.

Another legend tells that Shaki was a beautiful young girl. She was so attractive that an Arab invader who came to conquer country couldn’t resist her beauty and fell in love with her. When he ordered Shaki to come to him, the girl did not obey his will and chose death. Shaki threw herself down from a great height, and the hem of her dress suddenly turned into a waterfall.
