Azokh Cave

Azokh is an ancient cave in Hadrut, Artsakh, between the villages of Azokh and Drakhtik. This cave is an important historical and archeological site, as it is believed to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, possibly since the beginning of mankind. It is very large, taking a total of about 8000 square meters. The largest hall of the cave is around 3000 square meters.

 

Over the course of many excavations, new discoveries have continued to be found. Ten layers have been excavated. Among the things from the latest dates were clay dishes from the middle ages. Deeper in, much older things were found, such as animal bones and human bones, believed to be from prehistoric times. Wine pitchers and stone tools from those days have been found too, suggesting that this place was inhabited in its earliest days, and people hunted animals in the area. It is also believed that during the Mongol invasions, the people of Artsakh hid their treasures in this cave. There are many potential stories hidden in carvings in the walls and staircases. So much has been discovered in Azokh, but obviously there is much more that has not been learned yet about it.
