Day 1: On the way to South Armenia

Our adventure tour in Armenia will start with a trip to the south of the country. In the morning of the first day we will go to the south of Armenia and find ourselves in the 4th century. We will see the famous and significant temple – Khor Virap. The temple was built on a deep pit, where in the 4th century Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years. We will go down into the pit and learn more about this story. The surroundings of Khor Virap are also known for the fact that Mount Ararat is very clearly seen from there.

Then we will head to the wine region of Armenia, where we will try the best wines of Areni.

An alpine fortress on the edge of the cliff

We will chronologically walk through history and find ourselves in the 5th century, when the Smbataberd fortress was built. It is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Armenia. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs. It has strong walls with semicircular towers with the height of 8-10 meters and the width of 3-4 meters. There are many legends and tales about this fortress. These stories are connected to one of the greatest kings of Armenia. After exploring the fortress we will continue our way to the abandoned monastery complex of the 11th century.

Day 2: Along the slopes of Teksar Mountains

On the second day of our adventure tour in Armenia we will go to the Spitakavor Monastery. In the morning we will start our hike along narrow gorges to the monastery, which is located on the slopes of the Teksar Mountains. During the hike, the entire Vayots Dzor region will be visible from above.

Day 3: Phantoms of Vorotan Gorge

After breakfast we will head to Syunik region. We will descend to Vorotan Gorge, where we will see several abandoned villages with houses carved in the rock. After witnessing all this, you will be able to imagine how people once lived in these caves.

Old Khot is one of the oldest settlements in the Syunik region. This place is rightfully called the “Armenian Machu Picchu”. There are many burials in Old Khot dating back to 1-2nd centuries BC. On the territory of one of the cemeteries, there are ruins of the Red Church built in the 12th century.

After exploring the Old Khot village we will continue our journey along narrow wooded paths to the abandoned village Old Shinuhayr (“Father of settlements”). Shinuhayr is one of the oldest villages in Syunik. The very last resident of the village lived here until 2017.

In the evening we will head to Tatev village.

Day 4: Syunik region in all its glory

In the morning we will visit the Tatev monastery complex and get acquainted with its history. The monastery is named after St. Eustathius (arm. Yevstatios-Statevos-Tatev), a disciple of the Apostle Thaddeus who preached Christianity and died for the new faith.

After seeing the monastery we will go down to the Devil’s Bridge. It is a bridge made by nature itself. There are stalactites and stalagmites under the bridge, as well as natural “baths” of mineral water. If the day is warm, we will swim in those baths with healthy mineral water.

We will continue our way to one of the most visited villages in Syunik – Old Khndzoresk, which is famous for its caves and a swinging bridge, 160 meters long. At the beginning of the 20th century, about eight thousand people lived in Old Khndzoresk.

Next we will visit the Noravank Monastery, which the locals also call Red Monastery. The gorge, in which the monastery is located, is famous for its red sheer cliffs towering behind the monastery.

In the evening we will return to Yerevan.
