Mount Mrav

Mount Mrav

Legendary mount Mrav is one of the highest peaks of Mrav Mountain Range. It should be mentioned, that the name of the mountain range comes from the name of this mount. So it is worth writing a few lines about Mrav Mountain Range.

The latter is considered to be one of the highest and the longest ranges of Lesser Caucasus. The length of the range is 85 km. The range begins with Mount Big Hinal (3367m), where four mountain ranges meet. The range has almost 20 peaks, the height of which reach more than 3000m. The most interesting peaks are Big Hinal (3367m), Spitakasar (3200m), Omar (3395m), the highest peaks are Gomshasar (3724m) and Mrav (3340m).

Below there is a unique photo of Mrav taken from Gomshasar, from 13 km distance.

According to Makar Barkhudaryants (Artsakh, 1895), there is a secret place and a cave on the mountain. He writes, “Mrav is the highest mount in Karabakh (Artsakh), which is situated between the borders of Jraberd and Gyulistan. There are two dangerous and scary routes, which lead to the peak, the first is the eastern peak from the side of Gyulistan, and the western one from the side of Jraberd. There is a small area on the rocky peak, which is bounded with large boulders, which serve as a wall for people not to fall down. There is also a small khachkar, the story tells that there is a martyr’s tomb under this khachkar, because of that tomb it has become a place of pilgrimage. There is a cold cave from the eastern side, even in summer there is cold water inside”.

Unfortunately, I did not manage to visit the mountain to find the cave, so I have to be content with that old information.
