Regions of Armenia and Their Highest Peaks

In this article we included information about the regions of Armenian and their highest peaks. The borderlines of some regions pass through the mountain belts, because of which the peaks of two provinces might coincide.  

Lori Region – Mountain Achqasar / 3196 m

Mountain Achqasar is situated on the borderline of Shirak and Lori provinces. It is the highest point of Javakh mountain belt.

Achqasar is a lava cone which consists of andesites, the slopes are steep and covered by subalpine vegetation. The high-ups of the mountain are covered by cliffs and stone ledges.

Tavush Region – Mountain Miapor / 2993 m

The highest peak of Tavush region is the mountain Miapor. The mountain is located on the borderline of Tavush and Gegharkunik regions. The mountain range of Miapor stretches from the Aghstev valley to Kashatagh mountain. It is a fold mountain belt. The Hakhum, Tavush and Khndzorut rivers are initiating from its eastern and northern slopes.  Mountain ranges of Paytasar, Hakhum, Tavush, Kenats and Khndzorut also branch from its slopes. The northern slopes are wooded and are covered by alpine-meadows in the high-up zones. South-western slopes are included in the territory of Dilijan National Park.

Aragatsotn Region – Mount Aragats / 4090 m

The highest peak of Aragatsotn region is mount Aragats.

Mount Aragats is a regular cone with jagged summits and slightly oblique slopes. It is the fourth highest mountain of Armenian Highland and the highest one of Armenia. It has four main peaks the highest of which is the Northern one with the height of 4090,1 meters (Western` 3995,3 meters, Eastern` 3908,2 meters, Southern` 3887,8 meters).

Shirak Region – Mountain Tejaruyk / 3423 m

Mountain Tejaruyk is located on the borderline of Shirak and Aragatsotn regions. In some sources it is written that the highest summit of Shirak region is Aragats, as the border of Shirak and Aragatsotn passes through the summit of Aragats,  but the interregional border passes through Aragats massif, not the summit. Mountain Tejaruyk is one of the summits of Aragats massif.

Kotayk & Gegharkunik Regions – Mount Azhdahak / 3597 m

The highest mountain of Kotayk region is Azhdahak.

Mount Azhdahak is the highest point of Geghama mountain range and is located on the borderline of Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions. Azhdahak is an extinct volcanic cone. The crater is 50 meters in depth and has a diameter equal to 500 hundred meters, the crater of which is filled with water.

The absolute height of Azhdahak is 3597 meters; the relative altitude is 600 meters. The mountain was formed in upper anthropogenic, as a result of volcanic eruptions and explosions. It is made up of volcanic bombs and gray slags.

Ararat Region – Mountain Spitakasar / 3555 m

In the north-east of Ararat region is situated the highest point of the province – mountain Spitakasar. Spitakasar is a volcanic massif. It is the second highest peak of Geghama mountain range (the highest peak is Azhdahak – 3597 m). It is a dome-shaped mountain, made up of obsidian and perlite.

Armavir Region – Mountain Karmratar / 1286 m

Mountain Karmratar is located on the borderline of Armavir and Aragatsotn regions.

Vayots Dzor Region – Mountain Vardenis / 3522 m

Mountain Vardenis is located on the borderline of Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor regions. It is the highest point of Vardenis mountain range. The slopes are rocky, covered by alpine meadows. The eastern slope is rich with cold springs. Rocky and mountainous vegetation is widespread over the high-up zones of mount Vardenis.

Syunik Region – Mountain Kaputjugh / 3904 m

Mountain Kaputjugh lies on the borderline of Syunik province and Nakhijevan. It is the highest point of the Zangezur mountain range, located 9 km of the village Kajarants. The mountain is made of granodiorites. The slopes are steep and cliffy, fragmented by the valleys of Voghji and Gilyan rivers. The mountain is characterized by frost weathering and anthropogenic glacial abrasions. Glacial lakes can be found there. The climate is described as alpine tundra and is severely cold. The annual amount of precipitation is 800-850 millimeters. The average snow-cover duration is 9-10 months. The summit is smooth with poor vegetation.
